    Hi Helen,
I am also interested in any guidelines for sterile stock in cars etc.
Thank you for asking the question.

    Dear Teresa

Have a look at the NSW Health Infection Control Policy PD2007_036, it stipulates that ‘Eyewear must be optically clear, anti fog, distortion free, close fitting, shielded at the side and conform to AS/NZS 1336 and AS/NZS 1337.

    Dear All

I was approached this week and was told by one of the staff members that the eye protection that is provided by our facility does not comply with the standards.

What is provided is the coloured PVC bands with the disposable eye visor which is threaded onto the coloured PVC band. These can be placed over existing prescription glasses and each staff member knows which one is theirs. I hope everyone knows which ones I am referring to.

Is this staff member correct? Are there specific standards that I should be looking up that state that this eye protection does not comply?

I am not too happy with them myself as they are quite flimsy and if worn over glasses they do not offer protection between the forehead and the edge of the of the eyewear, and they do not provide protection at the sides either.

Any feedback will be greatly accepted. Thank you.

    Hi Matt,
What constitutes a home like environment?
Have the people who suggested “that dressing trolleys should not be used in aged care facilities as this reduces the homely nature of the facility” ever cared for an ageing relative

    Dear All,

In HONG KONG, we are also preparing for hospital accreditation program by following the AUS standards.

As regards the disinfection of dressing trolleys practices, the auditors do not allow us using alcohol solution to disinfect it. However, it seems relevant requirement is not available in the accreditation manual. Hence, we would like to know the prevailing practices for disinfection of dressing trolley in Aus.

    Hi Matt

We use a procedure trolley for dressings in our residential aged care facilities. The trolleys are stored in the treatment room, cleaned and set up for a procedure as needed. The registered nurse usually does the procedures in the Drs room.

We completed our accreditation earlier this year with no issues highlighted regarding this practice.

    Hi Matt,

I find this quite odd. We use procedure trolleys with sharps containers and ABHR attached in our residential aged care facilities. These procedure trolleys are stored in utility rooms when not in use. They are not stored in the resident’s rooms. This has never been raised at accreditation as being an issue. Indeed I would have concerns if the facility did not use procedure trolleys.

    Kind regards.

    Hi All,

It has been suggested to me that dressing trolleys should not be used in aged care facilities as this reduces the homely nature of the facility and can put the facility at risk in relation to their accreditation. Instead the facility wants to use the bedside table or bed to lay out the sterile field. I have a number of concerns about this, both from an OH&S and infection prevention point of view. Has anyone else come across this argument before?

    Cheers Matt

    >>
    >> This is a brief, preliminary announcement that we are planning a joint
    >> German-Singaporean Symposium on Pathogenic E. coli for Monday, the 23rd
    >> April 2012. This is to be held here in Singapore and planned as a
    >> whole-day
    >> symposium.
    >>
    >> We have been putting this together with the German Embassy Singapore and
    >> involvement of several local institutions.
    >>
    >> The main aim is to provide a local South-East Asian audience with insight
    >> concerning the 2011 German EHEC outbreak. As most of you would be aware,
    >> this was a major public health concern involving nearly 4000 cases of
    >> illness and nearly 50 deaths. The theme of the symposium will be: “What
    >> can

    >> outbreaks

    >>
    >> The preliminary list of speakers is:

    >>
    >> Prof. Ulrich Dobrindt

    >>
    >> Prof. Joerg Hacker
    >> – President of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (expert in E.
    >> coli pathogenicity research)
    >>
    >> The details are still in the process of being finalised. This means there
    >> may be changes.
    >>
    >> Of course, it is unlikely that such a symposium would warrant a trip to

    >> However some may by chance be travelling in the region at the time, and

    Pathogenic E. coli

    > Dear Group,
    >
    >
    >
The theme of the symposium will be: “What
    > can
    > be learnt from the German EHEC outbreak in terms of investigating
    > outbreaks
    > and strengthening outbreak response capacities?”
    >
    > The preliminary list of speakers is:
    >
    > Prof. Reinhard Burger
    > – President of the Robert Koch Institute, the German National Public
    > Health
    > Institute
    >
    > Prof. Ulrich Dobrindt
    > – Representing the German National Consultant Laboratory for
    > Haemolytic-Uraemic Syndrome
    >
    > Prof. Rolf Stahl
    > – University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (his department was involved in
    > clinical case management)
    >
    > Prof. Bernd Appel
    > – Federal Institute of Risk Assessment (his department did the tracing of
    > food sources)
    >
    > Prof. Joerg Hacker
    > – President of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (expert in E.
    > coli pathogenicity research)
    >
    > The details are still in the process of being finalised. This means there
    > may be changes.
    >
    > Of course, it is unlikely that such a symposium would warrant a trip to
    > Singapore for most AICA List members based in Australia or New Zealand,
    > However some may by chance be travelling in the region at the time, and
    > there are also a few AICA List recipients based in South-East Asia.
    >
    > If anyone is interested in the details of the symposium, please get in
    > touch with me, and I can send further information and a flyer.
    >

    Hi Fiona,
Would be good to see your patient protection posters if you are willing to share please.
We are a small country hospital that does not Isolate a lot but we do have colour coded signage which states the type of isolation and PPE required.
Would be placed on patients door if required.

    Hi Nicky,

At our facility there was quite a lot of concern about patient privacy in relation to signage. We have compromised. The poster states ‘patient protection’ and is colour coded to the type of precautions required. All staff have an information tag to wear with their ID which tells them what each coloured poster means. There is also a ‘quick reference guide’ in every nurses station.

Of course it is quite obvious that the patient has something ‘different’ going on due to the PPE and additional rubbish bins required for each room.

I am happy to share our posters with you if you would like.

    Hi All,

I work in a private hospital who currently uses a colored magnet outside the patients room to denote if any precautions are required, for example yellow is for contact etc. This had been fraught with problems due to people often unaware of there meanings, forgetting or missing the magnets.

I have seen some posters to place on doors released by the commission outlining appropriate PPE and what type of precautions are in place.

I wondered from a privacy issue what other private hospitals were doing with regards to patients in isolation and whether they were using posters on doors. I have had comments that if a poster is on the door then it is obvious to others walking past that the patient has an infection.

I would welcome your thoughts and opinions on this subject.

Hi Barbara. I am a small country ICC in a Multi Purpose Service in Orbost, Victoria.
We have the ABHR at the entrance to each room and in required areas, eg on dressing, IV, ward round trolleys etc, as well at various spots in OPD, Mid, Nursery, Theatre, Nursing home rooms,Lift entrance, kitchen and entrance, Hostel, Community health areas, Reception, Medical clinic etc, District nurses prefer a gel. Ours are mostly in a steele bracket.
We have reviewed placement of ABHR at the entrances and on the end of beds- however we are small and have a very mixed patient population.

St John of God Hospital Subiaco has placed posters along with hand gel in all public areas – main entrances, outside each ward entrance, day of surgery admission areas & entry to the operating suite. We even have it outside the hospital chapel!

We have brackets next to the posters for the gel and so far no issues other than having to remind staff from time to time to renew the bottles when empty. If anyone would like to see our poster am happy to send.
