    Hi Christine,
Have you looked at the Australian Healthcare Facility Guidelines, Part D – Infection Prevention and Control, D.0002 – Building elements.
This lists the where hand wash basins must be situated, the type of basin etc.
I found these guidelines very helpful during the building of the new Parkes Hospital.

You don’t often get email from cmorrison2@anglicaresq.org.au. Learn why this is important

    HI Danielle,

As hands should be washed if visibly soiled (nappies, continence aids)or in a gastro outbreak, then I would think that Hand basins would be required in the individual rooms

    Kind regards,

    Chris

I acknowledge and pay my respects to the traditional owners and custodians of the land in which I work, walk and live.

    Hi Dannielle,

I think it is good to understand that when there is a patient, hand hygiene basin must be performed. Every. Remember Normal flora & transient flora can cause infection/harm. Remember if the hand of either a carer/parents is soiled with any patients belongings or any procedures; it’s best to do HH in the patients environment. Remember the 5 moments of hand hygiene. After touching the patients environment. If it’s at the corridor, I think it’s another environment apart from the patients environment.
    Just some ideas.
    Thank you,

    Betty

    Hi brains trust

I have just been asked to review the plans for a brand new paediatric hospice, located off campus.
It will provide step down, respite and end of life care to our paediatric patients, with a focus on being a home-like environment.
I am told by the project team that there is no requirement or precedent for clinical handwashing basins in the patient room.
Handwashing by staff can be undertaken in the ensuite or at handbasins located in the corridor.

I cannot find any relevant standards pertaining specifically to hospice design. Its scope is not similar to aged care facilities nor a inpatient hospital room.
    Can anyone help?

    Kind regards
    Danielle

    Hello everyone
I need to find a poster that I can display at the front reception of our hospital that includes of the following:

Please do not visit this facility if you have any of the following:
    Fever
Respiratory symptoms (e.g. cough, sore throat, shortness of breath)
    Gastroenteritis (e.g. vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea)

The poster needs to have all of the above in one poster.
Does anyone have a similar poster that I can use?

    Hi Teresa and Heather
I am also interested in the recycling of disposable instruments. Teresa what type of cleaning/disinfection of the instruments do you perform prior to sending them to the scrap dealer? Currently our disposable instruments are being discarded as clinical waste (sharps).

What are you using to clean keyboards, phones etc at Nurses desks.
My workplace have supplied diluted bleach in spray bottles.

    Hi Joanne,
During the redevelopment of Forbes Hospital in 2015 we looked at this issue. In the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare, Part C, page 237 it states

    Ice machines
Ice storage receptacles and ice-making machines should be properly maintained and regularly
cleaned. Ice and ice-making machines may be contaminated through improper handling of ice
by patients and/or staff. Ice for human consumption should be differentiated from ice for first aid
or storage of clinical specimens. Pharmaceuticals or medical solutions should not be stored on ice
    intended for consumption.
Machines that dispense ice are preferable to those that require ice to be removed from bins or
chests with a scoop. Ice machines and their dispensers should be flushed and cleaned if they
have not been disconnected before anticipated lengthy water disruptions

We purchased the ice machines that dispense the ice directly into a cup and placed one each in the Birthing Suites, Recovery ward & Inpatient Unit. Maintenance has them on their preventative maintenance calendar for 6 monthly checks.
So far we have had no issues with them.
    Cheers,
    Teresa

    Hi Lindy,

We had this problem during the building of the new Parkes Hospital and the Forbes redevelopment of the Acute Care Services. I asked for samples of the wallpaper and the fabric that they wanted to use for the visitor chairs.
I exposed the samples to blood, urine, faeces, sputum & vomit then attempted to clean them using the detergent/disinfectant wipes and/or our disinfectant solution. None of the wallpaper samples were able to be cleaned properly and stained easily so we have no wallpaper. The fabric samples had similar results so they had to source different fabrics.
Is your fire officer aware of this proposal because I remember there being issues with wallpaper and fire compliance.
    Hope this helps.

Hello & thanks Glenys, Sylvia & Matt

We have made both the planners & architects aware of the Healthcare guidelines re this section & they have indicated that they are already aware of this information but that NSW Health infrastructure (who have final say over all approvals from NSW health building ) are apparently supportive of this being used hence me looking for more as they are not concerned about this being an significant risk vs what the risk to achieving their model of care and so are not at this point listening so we continue to debate as Infection prevention advocates

Again many thanks and I am still interested in any feedback / experiences or information however I relieved to note that I am not alone in my gut feelings for no I feel honoured to be in good company

    Hi Lindy,
I have no literature to back this up (but I will go and look), I too am internally screaming no dont! I cant see how you can effectively clean wall paper and given the harsh environment that a health service is, no matter how homely it feels, it is going to peel, rip and look bad very quickly. Unless there is some super wall paper that I am not aware of (probably anti-microbial as well).

    Hi Pamela,
We have been using microfiber since 2016 in all areas.
In the isolation rooms we use a 2 in 1 cleaner / disinfectant with the mops.
We have not had any problems.

    Good morning,
We are trialling microfiber and the company recommends not using detergent disinfectant with the mop heads.

I was wondering what other hospitals using the microfiber are doing in regards to cleaning:

    * MRO – isolation rooms

    * Bathroom floors

    * Clinical floors

    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Kind regards,
    Pam

    Hi All,

Wed are currently looking at developing transmission based precautions care plans for our facility. Do people have some pre-existing documents that I could review? Of course if we use anything we would acknowledge the relevant facility.
