Good morning Cate and Rita,
It would be best to discuss with the ID Team the reason for requesting isolation due to the nature of Acinetobacter and its ability to become resistant quickly. The person might have been treated with broad spectrum antimicrobials adding to the risk.
Acinetobacter has been associated with many outbreaks in ICUs across the world and is very hard to eradicate once in a unit.Kind regards

Hi Cate,
Unless it is an MRAB, we manage with standard precautions even in ICU. Perhaps you might ask the Intensivist his reasons for isolating? Often they just see Acinetobacter baumanii and isolate without realising it’s not multiresistant? (Apologies if you’ve already done that).

HI everyone
ID team have just recommended that we isolate in contact precautions an ICU patient with a sensitive Acinetobacter Baumannii in his sputum . Currently we only isolate and used contact transmission based precautions for multi resistant Acinetobacter Species.
The NHMRC guidelines do not include this pathogen in Section 6.4 Type and duration of precautions for specific infections and conditions .Until now we have always managed this pathogen using standard precautions when it is sensitive and in contact precautions when resistant.
Can you let you how you manage patients with this pathogen in your hospital? Do you include this pathogen in your transmission based precautions guidelines?

Hi All,
I have found the stainless steel bins hard to keep clean – leaving marks and starting to rust due to regular cleaning and disinfecting.
The plastic peddle bins are easier to keep clean and the better quality (more expensive) brands last longer and are more sturdy.Warm regards

Hi all
We experienced the exact same dilemma through multiple outbreaks, but finally settled on the no lid option during outbreaks. This allows for safe and effective disposal of PPE without having to touch and contaminate the lid. Pedal bins inevitably break fairly easily and the damaged lid becomes a source of contamination very quickly and for this reason we have moved away from them.
We used a variety of garden bins (large/sturdy/easy to clean) from Bunnings!
We were supported and advised by all agencies in Victoria (VACRC, PHU, ADF, Auzmat and Aspen Medical) to pursue this option.Kind regards,
Helen Finlay

Hi would anyone have any information on the types of bins suitable for discarding of PPE. I have looked at many infection control guides but none mention types of bins.
As a small facility with limited resources we have generally used bins with a swing lid ( then the lids go missing!) though this way rubbish is easier to discard! and we also have pedal operated bins but I find their life is short in comparison to the cost!.
Auditors from the Accreditation Agency have said best practice was the use of pedal bin. Infection control officers who audited my facility from the local health district told me bins with no lids was better but have not been able to provide written evidence either. While doing the Foundations course one of the film clips produced by the Tasmanian Government showed PPE being discarded into a bin without a lid. Does that mean for training its ok but in other situations it’s not??Looking forward to any replies.

Hi Monika,
There are specific guidelines available on the Australian Governments website.
Surgical masks are only required when a person is symptomatic, and in such a case the person will not be allowed to enter the facility. Other precautions should be in place to try and prevent cross contamination, such as social distancing, screening questions and taking temperatures before entry.
