Hi Kelly, we have had a Pet Visiting and Pet Therapy policy for a number of years which is based on the ACIPC position statement plus specific therapy dog guidelines. We recently had to update for some specific OH&S risks following a couple of incidents at one of our subacute sites. If you want to email me offline I am happy to share it with you or if you are on Prompt you can access a number of different organisations policies or guidelines including Peninsula Health’s.
Kind regards
Maureen

Hi Jayne
Our Executive have an incentive awards program which does reward areas which started ahead of Round 3 2015. Our health service has all clinical inpatient areas audited and we have submitted over 4500 observations as a health service for Round 1.
Our criteria is that areas must have achieved the following to receive the award:
* 100% compliance with mandatory hand hygiene elearning for the last 3 consecutive months
* areas that exceed their respective national peer aggregate score in a round of auditing can choose $1k of patient equipment for their area – they can roll this over for 3 rounds in the year
* the areas that are the highest performing in results in their respective categories (we have subacute, acute and high risk acute) across the 3 rounds of auditing in that 12 month period are able to choose $5K piece of patient equipment for their area
* areas must do their own audits using local trained or GS auditors
* areas must display their results of each round in a consumer friendly format. To that end we have had trained Gold Standard auditors and we also run local auditor courses with the expectation of at least 3 per ward. My team coordinate the areas and do inter-reliability with the auditors as well as support the auditors and NUMs with the usual issues. We also assist in some areas to do their auditing where necessary. We have 2 hospitals and in Victoria a higher state target than the national target.
Not all areas achieve the required peer aggregate target results so awards have been small numbers to date but overall each site has achieved greater overall results than either the Victorian acute target or their respective peer aggregate results. This is the first round that has not been time critical or stressful getting it all done as the auditors started in Dec and do small frequent moments.
This has really helped to foster local ownership and accountability for their results. The NUMs also have a KPI of 10% improvement in this and employee immunisation (all not just flu vaccine) in their annual performance review. This has freed us up to focus our resources on employee immunisation as we now give approval for commencement for all new employees and provide the service.
Kind regards

Dear Colleagues,
Just wondering if anyone has an annual hand hygiene award that is awarded to ward/department, and if so what are your criteria for selecting the winners?
We are about to award for the first time in our annual awards, but want the selection to be correct as it is not just about improvement but consistency of improvement, we don’t want to put staff off improving on hand hygiene compliance who have had good results but maybe have not been consistent!! Does that make sense???Anyway happy to hear your advise:)
Kind regards

We also sent out a SurveyMonkey to all medical staff and our casual workforce asking if they had their vaccines elsewhere or where declining which captured quite a few staff especially some of our JMOs during rotations across multiple hospitals

Peninsula HealthHi Kirsten,
Thanks for your response. Sending a text message is a great idea for contacting the casual and part timers, maybe not only asking for those who have had their jab elsewhere, but to remind them of when clinics are being held. We will definitely add that to our influenza vaccine planning for next year.Regards

Where I am is small and we have a significant part time/casual workforce. We found that MANY of our staff had been vaccinated elsewhere and weren’t letting us know. We sent out a text message to all our part time and casual nurses asking them to contact me if they had received their flu vax elsewhere. We increased our compliance by over 10%!

I agree that getting the managers to assist is the way to get buy-in, but I also like your idea of a prize draw – might hit up my exec for something good next year.Regards

t: 07 3232 7558 |m: 0427 607 812 | f: 07 3232 6043 |e: katherine.taylor@uchealth.com.auKatherine, we have had a lot of support from the executive team to achieve our current rate of 79%. We have broken down all staff into ward /departments lists and the managers were receiving weekly updates of progress within their department. As the number of vaccinated staff increased we then narrowed it down to those who have not been vaccinated. All unit managers were expected to assist us in ensuring that every staff member has either been vaccinated or has signed the declaration form formally declining the vaccine. We have around 950 staff on 2 sites for purposes of the influenza campaign. We have a major prize draw at the end of the season for staff who have been vaccinated. This has been in place for several years and alone didn’t assist that much in reaching our target. Last year we failed to reach 75% so the strategies this year really worked. It has, of course, come with the expense of great time and effort on the behalf of the infection control staff who are both nurse immunisers.

Sale VictoriaDear AICALIST members,
From July last year any new starters at our hospital sign that they agree to have the vaccines that are recommended in the Australian Immunisation Handbook for their designation, and now our executive are toying with the idea of making influenza vaccination compulsory for all of our staff next year. With a lot of effort this year -lots of flu jab clinics, lollypops & bright stickers for ID swing tags on vaccination, “grab a snag & get a jab” BBQ lunch, free pizza lunch for wards/areas with compliance above 80% – we have a compliance rate of 72% of staff either vaccinated or who have signed an opt-out form declaring that they have been offered the influenza vaccine, but decline for whatever reason. I think this compliance rate is pretty good – certainly better than the compliance in previous years.
I would like to know what everyone else is doing out there. What has worked and what has not?
Is influenza vaccination compulsory at your facility? Is it something your exec team is considering?
What do you consider to be an acceptable vaccination rate in your healthcare facility?
Is there any penalty for staff who are not vaccinated, e.g. unimmunised staff wearing mask at work during winter?
Regards
