    Hi Marlize

Guess the first question to ask is by what means have you been given the understanding that it is not allowed to hand wash items in aged care facilities? Were you informed by anyone with any level of authority or is it just a folklore type thing that has been passed around?

You are right, there is nothing in the laundry standards that addresses this. And there is nothing in the aged care standards that precludes hand washing either. The infection control outcome states that laundry is carried out with provision of infection control standards.

I think you may find that the reason that aged care facilities do not do handwashing comes down purely to resources, costs and practicality. Some facilities will accommodate this, and on the flip side, many residents will send their delicate laundry home to family. As an assessor for aged care, it is not an issue that I have ever had a problem with.

    Good afternoon,

It is my understanding that it is not allowed to hand wash items in aged care facilities. Im however unable to find the evidence for this, would any of you be able to help me with the standards or guidelines around this?

I did have a look at the laundry standard, but it doesnt deal specifically with this

    Thank you in advance

    Hi Jodie

Having worked many years in community health, it was certainly a situation that arose often. I have never seen any guidelines in regard to it though. Personally, it was always an individual choice and several factors came into being, not least the environment, but also of course, a time factor. It depended on the client, time, the situation etc. Not sure that is much help, and I have never heard of anyone raising the issue before.

    Hi All
Just wondering whether anyone has seen a guideline or has any thoughts regarding whether staff should accept food or drinks from clients homes if they are offered them.
I would have thought the staff member would need to assess the situation and politely decline if they didnt think it was safe. I personally would decline but just wondering if any one has had this issue raised before
    Thanks

    Hi Ann

Most aged care facilities record incidents of infection and do trend analysis on their stats, probably monthly. Dependent on the organisation, they may record what antibiotic is ordered and the depth of their recordings would vary from facility to facility. As the home is dealing with individual medical practitioners coming in, there tends to be inconsistency as to whether specimens are sent off to pathology. This also depends on the infection; in my experience, many chest infections are prescribed antibiotics as you say, similarly UTIs are often treated without pathology results, however wound swabs can be sent off.

There are standards that must be met in regards to infection control, which relate to the homes having an effective system. It does not prescribe how that is achieved, but gives guidelines.

    Hi
Does anyone have any information how they collate infections in Aged Care. At present if a resident has a chest infection the medical officer just orders antibiotics for the resident. There is no sputum sent for laboratory investigation.

I work in an aged care facility and homes are required to have separate microwaves for heating heat packs as opposed to those in which meals etc can be heated. They are all marked as such, according to their use.
Heatpacks are still heated in microwaves, although many homes have changed from wheat based packs to others less likely to burn, even when heated with a glass of water in the microwave.

    Hi everyone,

What is your practices regarding heating of heatpacks in microwaves. Do you use dedicated microwaves for this purpose? If it is being shared with patients to warm up their home meals any practices you encourage?
