Hi Teresa,
It very much depends which standard you are trying to apply! There are many including impact resistance (might be applicable in ortho surgery as well as the workshop), UV protection for dental staff and outside workers to name just two. Given your personal concerns, and I agree side protection is important, I would suggest getting a selection together and try to find a new option. I would also recommend that you have your OH&S people help with the process as they look at these things from a different and complementary view. Remember though you are not going please everyone.

Dear All
I was approached this week and was told by one of the staff members that the eye protection that is provided by our facility does not comply with the standards.
What is provided is the coloured PVC bands with the disposable eye visor which is threaded onto the coloured PVC band. These can be placed over existing prescription glasses and each staff member knows which one is theirs. I hope everyone knows which ones I am referring to.
Is this staff member correct? Are there specific standards that I should be looking up that state that this eye protection does not comply?
I am not too happy with them myself as they are quite flimsy and if worn over glasses they do not offer protection between the forehead and the edge of the of the eyewear, and they do not provide protection at the sides either.Any feedback will be greatly accepted. Thank you.

The community is an interesting situation. I have heard arguments that the disposal of sharps should be the responsibility of the prescribing health professional or the dispensing pharmacy (because generally patients/clients will not have access to clinical waste service). In my last position we had public bringing sharps to the hospital for collection because local government had threatened to stop collecting their household waste after sharps were found in it. This caused some issues as they were being brought in in less than ideal containers raising the risk of our staff getting stuck. Anyway the local GP’s and Pharmacy were very reluctant and very vocal about not accepting the sharps as their responsibility and in the interests of harmony the health service gave out sharps bins and disposed of them. Won’t work for every one though!
If you really want to get confusing have a look at the various regulations about cytotoxic waste. If we followed the letter of the legislation people with septic systems would not be allowed to have cytotoxic treatments at home!

Very interesting point, Claire. Depending on state and local government policies, some home use sharps may be allowed to be placed in general household waste in certain conditions. So there may be different rules governing sharps disposal in the community in different places as well. All adds to the confusion.

Please consider the environment before printing this emailWe are teaching in line with Michael’s email in our cannulation and phlebotomy course.
But I wonder what is there any standard for teaching community use by patients themselves? Perhaps this is where some confusion may arise?

Hi Rebecca,
The way I understand it a P2 respirator and an N95 respirator are functionally the same. N95 is NIOSH designation in the United Sates. P2 is the Australia classification. Both filter almost to the same level with N95 filtering 95% of particles and P2 filter 94% of particles (although there are slightly different particle sizes and velocities in the respective standards which means a respirator may be meeting both standards and EN classification as well). P2 is the Australian designation and relates to the AS/NZS standard 1716 (2009). In an Australian facility we should be using P2 respirators (and using this description in our documents) as this is what our standard requires. Manufacturers may only brand their product as N95 but they may meet P2 as well If so the manufacturer should provide written documentation of this.We should also be encouraging the use of the correct terminology as these are respiratory protective devices (respirators) under the standard and not masks. Because of this there are the requirements of medical clearance to use, fit testing and education programs in the standard that health services need to provide for staff using these devices, which is where our colleagues in Workplace Health and Safety come in.
Cheers Matt

Hi Sue,
You need to think about how will they work without power. If they are not on the uninterrupted supply then staff will be unable to use them if the power is out. One facility I worked at also had an issue with water temperature with these taps as you could not run them to allow the temperature to increase. This is more of an installation issue rather than a tap issue though. Maintenance and repair costs are also more than hand operated taps and need to be considered over the life of the product.

Subject: Re: Observational Audit Tools for IV CannulationHi all
Steve Burke, the Operations Manager for ACIPC, has said he is happy to host files on the ACIPC website if there are no copyright or intellectual property issues.
Until a better process has been developed, I would suggest that anyone that has files to share should contact Steve directly (opsmanager@acipc.org.au), and then once uploaded to the ACIPC website, can post information to the list regarding where members can access them.
ACIPC may also be able to provide the broader ACIPC membership with information on what files and tools are available via their regular e-Bulletins.
Would suggest Rachel still contact ACIPC Board formally to ensure a correct process is established for sharing such tools, but in the interim this may be one option.
Cheers

I really think sharing such tools is a great idea!
Unfortunately Infexion Connexion does not support attachments, so unless any files are hosted elsewhere, we cannot share them through this list.
Maybe ACIPC could be approached to develop a portal that resources could be uploaded to, and then links could be posted on the list?

So here is a thingit seems to me that quite a number of people may have a genuine interest in looking at your tool as discussed in a number of forums including the recent IC day in Melbourne. I wonder if you would be willing to post the tool through the Infexion Connexion list? Maybe others might like to do a similar thing so that people can build on their resources, share etc. Just a thought!!

Have to agree with Rachel,
Might be worth investigating a page on the ACIPC website where members could post various tools for sharing and comment?

Hi Fiona,
I agree with Terry. There is unlikely to be much in the way of evidence of spread of infection in this setting and I suspect the risk if any, would be fairly low. As a frequent user of public facilities aesthetically the wall mounted single urinal is highly preferential for the reasons outlined by Terry. I would add that in terms of maintenance the blockage of one urinal that can be isolated is easier to manage than a floor trough that tend to back up over the floor. I would look to your maintenance department for their input to confirm this with the set up you go with.
I would also consider the need for a lower mounted urinal for children to use as this is often overlooked. There is nothing like seeing a kid trying to aim up into urinal and getting it everywhere or balancing on the edge of the urinal which both my boys have done.
Cheers Matt
