    Hi Vanessa, ,

Im sure there is a document somewhere but that is what we have been told to do via our PHU and that is how we train staff now.

    Kind regards,

    Hello All You Clever People

I am trying to provide a rationale re doffing mask after you have exited a residents room when the resident is in isolation.

The person insists that you remove ALL PPE whilst in the infectious room. In aged care there is no ante room for doffing so you are either in an infectious environment or outside the room.

I have tried to explain that you doff all PPE except for mask in the residents room and remove mask when outside their room.

Can anyone point me to a document that says this – or am I wrong?

    Many thanks

    Vanessa Watkins

I think this might currently be state specific? Cannot see a Commonwealth

    Good afternoon everyone,

Just enquiring in which waste bin (general or clinical) do staff put their PPE after being in a precautions room (MRSA, VRE, CDiff etc).

Currently, we put all our PPE in to clinical waste.

I cannot see a clear directive in the Guild line for Prevention and control of infection in healthcare.

Do you place it in general waste or clinical waste?

    Thanks in advance

From all of the Staff here at Fitzgerald Aged Care, we wish you a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year!

    Helen Finlay

    Hi all

We experienced the exact same dilemma through multiple outbreaks, but
finally settled on the no lid option during outbreaks. This allows for safe
and effective disposal of PPE without having to touch and contaminate the
lid. Pedal bins inevitably break fairly easily and the damaged lid becomes a
source of contamination very quickly and for this reason we have moved away
    from them.

We used a variety of garden bins (large/sturdy/easy to clean) from Bunnings!

We were supported and advised by all agencies in Victoria (VACRC, PHU, ADF,
Auzmat and Aspen Medical) to pursue this option.

    Kind regards,

    Helen Finlay

Hi would anyone have any information on the types of bins suitable for
discarding of PPE. I have looked at many infection control guides but none
    mention types of bins.

As a small facility with limited resources we have generally used bins with
a swing lid ( then the lids go missing!) though this way rubbish is easier
to discard! and we also have pedal operated bins but I find their life is
short in comparison to the cost!.

Auditors from the Accreditation Agency have said best practice was the use
of pedal bin. Infection control officers who audited my facility from the
local health district told me bins with no lids was better but have not
been able to provide written evidence either. While doing the Foundations
course one of the film clips produced by the Tasmanian Government showed
PPE being discarded into a bin without a lid. Does that mean for training
its ok but in other situations it’s not??

    Looking forward to any replies.

    Hi Anna,

We have experienced the same. We have varying opinions by assessors as to
what is required for the disposal of PPE. We have gone on the no lid option
for inside the rooms as per Helen to avoid touching of the contaminated lid.
We did use Pedal bins outside the room to limit accessibility by wandering
residents. Would be great if there was some universal direction across the
    board.

Agree no lids is the way to go.

    Kind regards,

    question

    Brains Trust help needed

Everyone entering an Aged Care facility from May 1, 2020 had to have current
Fluvax certificate. It is now more than 6 months since that date and those
people who had 2020 Fluvax in March April May this year would be past the 6
    months immunity.

    Questions are:-

    1. Does everyone now need to have 2020 fluvax again to be able to enter Aged
    Care Facilities?

    2. Do the people who had been vaccinated in March/April/May have a different
immunity to influenza to the people who have not been vaccinated?

    Thanks for your help

    Hi Robyn,

I’m looking at the same thing in the Aged Care that I work in, so I’ll be
pleased to see what answers you receive.

I was thinking the opposite to you however, and was looking at getting the
holders for gloves placed on the walls of the ensuites, as at the moment the
gloves are not fixed and end up everywhere. I was also going to have paper
towels dispensers placed next to the gloves, mainly for staff use.

Am I on the wrong track?

    gloves stored in resident ensuite

    Hi there

Hoping you can post this question for me

A number of our residential sites store gloves in holders in the resident
    ensuite

I am looking for any evidence that identifies the risk of contamination to
the gloves and boxes they are stored in, from toilet flushing (we don’t have
lids in the main to allow for toilet seat raises to be in place)

My other concern is that staff then use the resident hand basin in the
ensuite to undertake hand hygiene before and after glove use

For the same reason of contamination of the environment from toilet flushing
and different levels of personal hygiene of residents I want to remove
    gloves from ensuites

I am having difficulties locating the evidence needed to convince managers
that gloves should be located at clinical hand basins or with the wall
mounted ABHR stations in corridor areas

I understand in acute settings gloves are generally wall mounted by the
clinical hand basin in the patient’s room, but we only have hand basins in
    the ensuite.

We generally do not have ABHR in each resident room for the safety of
    residents living with dementia

We also try our best to provide a home like environment, not cluttered with
    clinical equipment.

    I hope this makes sense

    Kind regards

    Hi Derrick

Notwithstanding the relevant Australian Standards applicable to laundry, in
mental health you face similar challenges to those of us working in the Aged
Care sector. In AC its all about choice, that includes having provision for
residents to be able to complete their laundry where they have the capacity
    – we simply can’t say “you have no choice, you have to use our service” –
same issue comes to the fore when families decide they are going to do their
relatives laundry – how on earth would we control how ‘clean’ their machine
is, or what they do between loads.

There are products on the market that facilitate the cleaning of washing,
but I am not aware of any Australian standard or documented process that
would address trying to ‘normalise’ things for those who can do them during
a pandemic – the pandemic is something we hope will be a once in a lifetime
    experience.

With residents I am lucky enough to care for there have been no issues to
date – but I would hate to think the solution is an institutional one,
thereby taking away more independence, which I believe would equally apply
    in a mental health setting.

At the end of the day the approach I take is a risk based one and go from
there. At this point in time, no COVID in the locale – in fact nothing for
the last 5 months, so likelihood is way down on the scale – RESULT – Risk
    managed, happy residents.

    Hope this helps

    Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has a policy/procedure/guidelines for washing
    machines in their facilities?

We have a few domestic machines in our mental health wards for patient use.
It has been brought to our attention that there are concerns of cross
infections as these are domestic machines and the requirements for cleaning
of machines in between patient uses.

Is there any guidelines on this? Any standard that dictate that we need to
use commercial machines instead with a specific heat setting to avoid cross
    infections?

And cleaning in between patients? This will include the dryers.

We have been asked to produce a guideline for our wards to address this and
any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
