The WHO HH Guidelines explain alcohol concentration, composition and type well. I have attached a couple of slides I developed that may help you.
Also note that there are alcohol types that are from petro-chemicals and alcohol that is natural (ie. from sugar cane and corn). Below are some other concepts to think about.
Also in 2016 the USA FDA asked US manufacturers to submit data regarding the long-term and frequent use of hand sanitisers that contained alcohol. Given the widespread use of alcohol-based HH product this will no doubt become an important issue for us to think about in terms of HCW use. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2016/06/30/2016-15410/safety-and-effectiveness-of-consumer-antiseptics-topical-antimicrobial-drug-products-for
Are all hand sanitisers healthy in terms of their ingredients?
* Most hand sanitisers contain alcohol as either ethanol, isopropanol or n-propanol, or combinations of two of those.
* Other preservatives are used to preserve other ingredients and to extend shelf life.
* Isopropyl alcohol is metabolised by to acetone
* Now some questions on how these sanitisers are absorbed and:
* the long-term safety of daily, repeated exposure to these ingredients
* the use of these products by pregnant women and children
* Emerging science suggesting exposure is higher than previously thoughtHope some of this may be useful for you and other ACIPC members.

Hi Sally
South Australia has a hygiene program in place called Wash, Wipe, Cover……don’t infect another! This includes downloadable posters and facts sheets some of which are aimed at the Aboriginal population. They were developed in collaboration with Aboriginal Health representatives. The resources can be found at:
http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/washwipecover
if you have any further questions regarding the resources you can contact off line.

Dear all
We are reviewing our Patient/Visitor signage for ABHR on Ward/hospital entry/exit.
Does anyone have any picture based posters appropriate for Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander people that they would be willing to share?Sally Brew

I agree with you Cath.
I wondered when and why ACIPC had become political.
We had a similar discussion here.

Dear Members
I was saddened to read the recent Press Release regarding the College’s position on Children In Detention. In my 25 plus years as a member and once President of AICA and as a 7 year board member and 2010 APIC President alignment of a professional body with any non-infection prevention political issue appears unprecedented.
Regardless of where members stand personally on this contentious issue it is arrogant and perhaps even incorrect for the President to assume unilateral support of his position by all members.
Further, whilst the AMA acts as the primary industrial relations agency for medical practitioners and as such rightly has an opinion on this issue the College purpose as stated in its Constitution makes no mention of political commentary as a goal.
Informally, I have canvassed views from at least two other senior College members who are offended by the College’s action. I would request that in future the Executive and College leadership do not assume members’ positions on non infection prevention matters and instead focus solely on working within the scope of the Constitution representing members well on infection prevention matters.
