We have just built 2 new cath labs in our Box Hill Hospital. We did not put in laminar flow for the reasons mentioned below that really the evidence is not strongly for or against. We did however ensure that they are hepa filtered and that air pressure is the same as in an operating suite environment, positive to adjacent areas. I believe this decision was also based on the Victorian Design Guidelines.

Subject: Hybrid Cardiac Cath LabsDear ICPs,
I am seeking your advice or any information you might have in relation to the use of laminar flow in hybrid cardiac cath labs. Our hospital is in the early stages of planning for a second cardiac cath lab to be built that potentially will also complete interventional radiology procedures. I have researched the topic on line and have found as many articles for laminar flow as there are against. None of the articles have referred specifically to a cardiac cath lab.Thank you in advance.

Subject: ice machines in hospital settingGood morning,
We are currently reviewing the ice machines used in our facility and looking to upgrade if required. Does anyone have experience with ice machines ie. pros and cons, what cleaning and maintenance schedule their facility has etc. I am aware of the food safety guidelines and CHRISP information but interested in ICPs experience.
At this stage ours are not required for any medical type use such as organ transportation.Thank you

We have recently opened a brand new SSD in Victoria and apart from the required validation of the sterilisers, the only area that we did do air sampling was in our sterile store room where we had Hepa Filtration. In our clean/packing room no microbiological sampling was undertaken as these areas do not have Hepa Filtration.
Happy for you to discuss off-line if you have further questions.

Good Evening
I am someone within the AICALIST brains trust can provide some advice regarding the necessity for microbial sampling of newly constructed SSD. I have not been able to find any reference to this being recommended prior to opening.
Does anyone know of any guidelines that apply to NSW?
Or, national or international references that may indicate that this would be recommended from a best practice point of view.
I would be grateful for any advice within the next few days, if possible.
Thank you

We have a policy that insulin pens may only be used in our facilities where the patient can safely self administer and recap. Staff are not permitted to use the pens as we too had seen many incidents mostly related to recapping of the pen.

Subject: safety of insulin pens for nursing staff use?Hi All
Our physician wants pharmacy to dispense a prefilled insulin pen to the patient and nursing staff use this to administer the required dose. This pen would then be used by both the nursing staff & patient throughout the patients admission.
I am wondering about the safety of using insulin pens as we have had a number of needlestick injuries from them in the past. If you do use then do you have procedures in place to prevent NSI that you would be happy to share
Thanks for your thoughts
Kind regards

INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL SERVICE (IPAC)Hi there,
Please can someone tell me if there are any Australian national infection prevention and control surveillance definitions for healthcare associated blood stream infections? I am aware of the ACSQHC CLABSI and SAB surveillance guides but I was wondering if there are any national ones for all HABSI used in Australia. The only ones I can find are the AICA ones from a number of years ago.I am interested in this because in our New Zealand facility we previously used these AICA definitions in the past and need to update now.
Cheers
Ruth

We had the same issue and have moved to the smaller canisters that fit into the brackets supplied by the company. These actually were more cost effective and were consider less wet than the tubs. We have had no further complaints.

Does anyone use disposable detergent wipes for cleaning non-critical items between patients?
We have started using ‘Tuffies’ brand wipes for cleaning non-critical items between patients.
The ward staff like them – but Theatre staff find the larger wipes from the tubs too wet, they take ages to dry & leave a residue.
The smaller wipes in the flexicans – are too small & dry out in the can.
I wondered what other hospitals use for cleaning stainless steel trolleys & instrument trays between cases.
