Infection Control at Bendigo Health manages all occupational exposures in business hours. We provide counselling and the gaining of consent for BBV testing of recipient and source and organise follow up testing. After hour and weekend exposures are referred to E.D. by the After Hours Manager and we are notified by phone message the next morning. We then contact staff member to ensure counselling and appropriate testing was done.

I am hoping that you might be able to assist me. We are currently revising the model in which my health service currently manages occupaitonal exposures. The current model involves the recipient of an exposure visiting the emergency department for assessment. Infection prevention and control (IPAC) will then complete all followup. The model we are considering is a ‘nurse led’ occupational exposure management program based within IPAC.
I am wondering what models other health facilities currently work (success of same) with to manage occupational exposures and if you would be willing to share that information.Thank you in advance.

Dear Sue,
We see Staff during hours in our clinic, where we do a Risk Assessment, consent for BBV screening, counselling and collect serology. The source is also assessed regarding required follow-up. Any high risk exposure is referred to the I.D. team.
After hours, the AHNM assesses the HCW and source. She/ he will them complete a Occ Exposure Summary and forward it to staff health to follow-up.Please feel free to contact me if you would like further information regarding any of the paperwork we use for our exposures.
