Hi Catherine,
In our maternity unit, we do the following:
Rinse with cold water after use
Wash thoroughly (using bottle brush for bottles), in hot water and detergent
Rinse in hot water
Thermally disinfect
Place in fridge and change after 24 hrs (labelled).
We are lucky though that we have a bottle washing machine.
Regards,
Helen.

We are currently reviewing our policy/protocols for infant feeding equipment and there appears to be a difference of opinion when it comes to the cleaning/sterilisation process, especially with formula feeding equipment. My question is do you advise mothers to;
1. wash equipment in warm soapy water, rinse in hot water, and air dry and store in a clean container, or
2. wash equipment in warm soapy water, rinse in hot water, air dry and store in a clean container, and sterilise once every 24 hours, or
3. wash equipment as above and sterilise after each use.Regards

Hi,
Evidence from the children’s hospital, Westmead, NSW, suggests that drawing up with just a syringe increases the risk of infection due to contamination of the syringe tip on the opening of the plastic ampoule. Therefore, using a sterile needle is preferable.
There is also evidence from James Paget University Hospitals in the UK to support this.
You can also get sterile pre filled syringes now with both saline and water.

HiQuick few questions regarding drawing up from a (plastic) ampoule of sterile saline or water.
1) Would you recommend drawing up using a sterile needle and syringe or would you draw up using a sterile syringe only and
2) Does anyone know of any evidence or have any opinion that one method is preferential to the other for reducing risk of contamination of the syringe or fluid?
Regards
Pauline
