Morning All, I recently found our PICC team no longer use antiseptic hand wash pre PICC insertion and use neutral soap. Can anyone tell me where to find evidence of using antiseptic hand wash prior to invasive procedures?
Thank you

Hi all,
I would like to ask if anyone has a hand care assessment tool for healthcare workers that are potentially having problems with the hand hygiene products supplied by the facility?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Michael,
We had a similar discussion about two years ago and subsequently moved to single use pens. If you are interested, I can provide the product order details off line. Our patients are marked prior to entering the operating theatre.

Hi all
What do other facilities use for marking skin prior to surgery? We currently use a reusable felt tip permanent marker that doesn’t appear to be cleaned in any way between each patient. This occurs prior to the surgical procedure outside of the operating room, so does not need to enter the sterile field.
Our questions revolve around whether we should source disposable pens, or try to clean the markers between each patient use. This raises the question: how do you clean a felt tip??
We did note some interesting discussions on possible cross-contamination using marking pens (eg http://patientsafetyauthority.org/ADVISORIES/AdvisoryLibrary/2008/Dec5(4)/Pages/130.aspx ).
Any comments?
Thanks

Hi Fiona,
An argument that you could possibly use is that ” ward storage should be specifically designed for patient supplies only and not located with cleaning materials or food items or adjacent to a hand basin”. This quote is from
NSW Health Peak Purchasing Council AS/NZ 4187 Working Party. Guidelines for Storage and Handling of Sterile Consumables. April 2003. ( a bit dated I know, but still current as it relates to the current standard)I only have this document in hard copy, but if you like can arrange to get it, or the section you need, to you.
Another argument may be that the facility would need a separate refrigerator to store milk etc for the tea and coffee. The Commonwealth IC guidelines section 19.3: Refrigerators state that “Food should not be stored with contaminated material, clinical specimens or medical products such as drugs, vaccines and blood”.
I hope this helps
Helen

email: Helen.Newman@SESIAHS.health.nsw.gov.auHi All,
I have been asked to consider placing a zip urn for hot water access in a medication room. My initial response was it is not appropriate to make tea and coffee in the same room where staff are drawing up medications. However when I have looked for the evidence to back this up I have had trouble finding any.
What do others think about this issue from an infection prevention and control point of view?
Kind Regards,
