Dear All,
A quick warning on making your own products. It can be very dangerous. Alcohol based products (ABHR or Alcohol based Disinfectants) are highly flammable. Flash fires come without warning and can cause major burns. Explosions are possible (just ask the Hunter Valley wine makers). A barmix on the benchtop with rubbing alcohol may be the great recipe for your own real life disaster.
And making your own solution of chlorine disinfectant also is dangerous. An eye splash with a solution of concentrated chlorine (such as pool chlorine – circa 12.5% Sodium Hypochlorite) will cause permanent eye damage within 10 seconds. Plus, how do you ensure that the concentration of available chlorine is what is required and intended without quality control testing using a validated method?
A quick comment on manufacturing cleaning and disinfecting products with TGA approvals. It is difficult, and demand is suddenly high, but production is on-going and suppliers are working to ensure continuity of supply. Please don’t panic. Suppliers in Australia are all still making products and there are no supply chain issues other than the current volume of demand.
We need to all work together, but please all be aware that taking the law into your own hands (and attempting to make your own and unlicensed therapeutic goods), may involve unforeseen risks and the rule of unintended consequences will take over.Sincerely

Hello all,
Several veterinary clinics are running out of basic hand hygiene products. Veterinary suppliers are out of ABHR and disposable paper towel is running low.
I have seen the WHO Guidelines to make your own ABHR (https://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf) which may be useful.I can’t find anything for the use of multi use towels. Despite these not being recommended, this might be the only option available. Are there any guidelines / resources for cleaning/disinfecting / sterilising multi use hand towels?
Thank you,
Angela

Hi all,
Is anyone concerned that this (and other statements) ignores the requirement for fit testing of staff who are going to rely on airborne mask protection?
Btw, CEC NSW have developed nice combined Contact/Droplet signage for those with geographical signage space deficiency (GSSD). Kathy D am sure will share it.

NadeneAnother reference from ICHE which was also Australian research, and which genetically linked the transmission events from the index patients, via thrid party surfaces including environmental surfaces and POC equipment is Lee et al., ‘Defining the Role of the Environment in the Emergence andPersistence of vanA Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) in an Intensive Care Unit: A Molecular Epidemiological Study: Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol:2018:1-8’. Although the paper is focused around VRE (Van A and Van B), the principles of using modern genetic tools to track the bugs as they move around within a ward setting and with a defined patient group is a powerful indicator for all infection preventionists.
