    Hi Leisa

    No we haven’t gone as far as the fit testing, just train staff on fit checking.

    Hope you are well.

    Morning All,

    I know there is always a lot of debate of ‘Fit Testing’ for N95 Masks.

    I’m interested to hear if any organisations have undertaken this large piece of work for their workplace?

    Dear all

    I would like to make a “go to” kit for my small private hospital is SA. Currently we do not expect to admit any COVID19 patients and have taken as many measures to prevent the occurrence of COVID19 within our walls – however I would like to develop a kit that can be organized and ready to use should a suspected case appear

    I imagine it would contain

    * SA health Pathology forms- I would love a laminated guide to use as a tool as to what to write on the request

    * Swabs

    * Mask

    * Gloves

    * Face shield

    Can anyone provide more information?
    Has anyone got a kit made up that they would be willing to share

    Kindest Regards

    Hi Meredith

    We do not use any special equipment. We do undertake fit testing with new staff and it is a yearly competency for our ED staff. We talk them through the whole process of putting it on, blowing in and out, checking the seal for air leakage and removing safely. We advise on the correct size and discuss issues with beards etc.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi John

    The 2019 Australian Guidelines p. 116 recommends fit testing as follows:

    * on commencement of employment for HCWs in clinical areas where there is a significant risk of exposure via airborne route

    * when there is significant change to the wearer’s facial characteristics (eg. weight loss or gain, etc)

    * annually thereafter (AS/NZS 1715:2009)

    * link here https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/about-us/publications/australian-guidelines-prevention-and-control-infection-healthcare-2019#block-views-block-file-attachments-content-block-1

    There are two types of fit testing:

    * Qualitative – inexpensive equipment (approximately $400 per kit) requires hood and sprays, company rep can provide training to staff to perform fit testing, human resources required to perform fit testing on staff

    * Quantitative – expensive equipment, generally performed by mask company reps where a good seal cannot be obtained via a qualitative approach

    It is my understanding that all HCFs are recommended to undertake fit testing for staff, however my observation is that very few do. I am aware of two HCFs that participate in fit testing (1 x major public hospital and 1 private hospital).

    It would be interesting to know how many other HCFs participate in fit testing.

    Kind regards

    Hi all,

    Is anyone concerned that this (and other statements) ignores the requirement for fit testing of staff who are going to rely on airborne mask protection?

    Btw, CEC NSW have developed nice combined Contact/Droplet signage for those with geographical signage space deficiency (GSSD). Kathy D am sure will share it.

    Hi Fiona

    I do not see a problem with recapping a blunt needle after drawing up medication as it has not been used on a patient and it is safer in regards to ANTT to remove needle with cap on than risk touching the key part.

    Hi Fiona,

    I personally recap just to remove the needle from the syringe as I was taught to never touch the coloured hub. The premise of not recapping is to prevent transmission of infection via needlestick from needles used on people. A risk analysis would indicate that as the needle has not been used on a person then it is safe to recap.

    Hi All,

    We are currently having discussions about how to safely draw up medications and whether it is suitable to recap a blunt fill drawing up needle to expel air from a syringe.

    One side of the argument is that the blunt fill is recapped so that when air is expelled the contents are not aerosolised. The other side is that a needle (blunt or otherwise) should never be recapped.

    I would be interested to know other people’s thoughts and what evidence if any you have for this.

    Dear ACIPC members,
    I have a query about what room cleaning is required for patients in droplet precautions. What does everyone use for daily room cleaning when the patient is in the room? Do you have a different process for post-discharge room cleaning for droplet precautions?

    Regards
    Kathy

    This is interesting as it could solve the problem when our patients drink the ABHR as it contains alcohol.

    Hi everyone,
    I am interested if anyone is aware of an alcohol free ABHR (maybe an A-FHR?!) that is listed on the TGA. Some of our members work in facilities where ABHR is classified as contraband.
    I can recall some supply distributors displaying alcohol free preparations at last year’s ACIPC Conference, but I wasn’t aware of any products today that were actually listed.
    If anyone could provide some suggestions directly, rather than through this forum, I would be grateful.
    Thank you,
    Kylie

    Hi Janine

    We only train clinical staff as it can be difficult for them to watch procedures being non-clinical and they have less understanding of what procedures are etc.

    I have tried training a few in the past so they could have a better understanding to go on and do other auditing for us but they got lost very easily as their clinical knowledge is limited.

    Good Morning,

    Do any facilities have HH auditors that are non-clinicians e.g. operational staff & admin staff?

    I’m aware that HHA recommend that you should only have professional staff as auditors but have been asked the question by my line manager?

    If you do, can you advise if they audit all staff and all wards?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Dear All,
    Just trying to get further compliancy in my paper bound patient system for documentation upon insertion and removal of IVCs
    Does anyone use a sticker “roll” for this purpose? – if so do you mind privately emailing me your supplier ect?

    I currently have stickers on an A4 format but think they would be more accessible on a sticker roll ( like our drug labels ect)

    Many thanks ,
