Dear Robyn,

The College routinely receives official advice from a variety of national
and international authorities, including the Australian Department of
Health, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, the
Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, the US Centres for Disease
Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and the International
Federation of Infection Control to name but a few. We also provide advice
to these and other authorities, and work with them collaboratively to
produce such advice, as a lead agency and authority.

In terms of the current context, the College is heavily engaged with the
Commonwealth and other authorities on a range of infection prevention and
control matters, including the most recent challenges with respect to Ebola
Virus Disease (EVD). We are working actively with the Office of the
Australian Government Chief Medical Officer and the Australian Health
Protection Principal Committee with respect to EVD, including on future
national strategies that Professor Gilbert will take leadership of in her
new role. The College and other respected authorities, including our
colleagues within the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, are
part of this process. We expect to be able to provide specific additional
advice about this to members in the coming week.

The College welcomes the appointment of Professor Gilbert and commends the
Australian Government on this initiative, and look forward to participating
actively in national and international efforts to prevent and control the
spread of EVD.
