Hi Michael
HICSIG has a working group running at the moment that are in the process of developing guidelines to prevent the transmission of MRSA in Residential Aged Care Facilities. I am a member as well as many others, John Ferguson is the Chair. It is planned that the guidelines will have sections on AB Stewardship, Hand Hygiene, Standard Precautions, Additional Contact precautions, Skin protection and Wound Management, Environment and Equipment, Surveillance, Outbreak Identification and Management, Screening and Clearance, Laundry and Linen management. Michelle Callard presented on the work of the group at the AICA conf in Perth. We hope to have a first draft ready for comment early next year.
Cheers

I am seeking informed comment on the management of Multiresistant
Organisms (MROs) in the non-acute sector, specifically residential care.
I am aware of some guidelines from SA (for MRSA and VRE specifically –
http://www.health.sa.gov.au/INFECTIONCONTROL/Default.aspx?tabid157)
that note that risk to patients from actual infection from MROs is much
lower, but am wondering what other Australian guidelines there may be
out there for managing MRO’s in residential care. The new Australian
national infection control guidelines only comment (p 113) B3.1.2) that
“In non-acute healthcare settings, general measures of infection control
(particularly hand hygiene by both patients and healthcare workers)
maybe enough to prevent transmission”, which is somewhat general
statement.I also thought HICSIG was looking at residential care infection control
– is anyone aware if they actually developed any guidelines for MRO
management?Thanks for all comments.
Cheers
