Hi John,
Exciting future ahead for us all. Attached are some resources you may or may not already be across.
Important to remember – re-useable is most environmentally effective if the energy used to sterilise is green. If it is dirty brown coal – it is actually more environmentally harmful to re-use.
So we need to do more environmental Life-cycle analysis to understand the true impact of these interventions.Worth checking out – Elis – Life Cycle Analysis (elis-gownslifecycleanalysis.com)
John Hunter is the largest solar on a hospital in the world – so your good on the energy front!

Stan is a local senior surgeon leading the charge with reducing waste in surgery etc.
He keeps on getting told that things are the way they are because of infection control considerations
I dont think that is true!
However, it really is important for IPC as a profession to promote more sustainable approaches with less waste etc.
I invite you to share your local initiatives so that we can learn more together about better ways!
Clearly decisions made on a cost reduction basis need to factor in the waste and resources issues.Best wishes
JohnHi John
Just to expand on our corridor conversation the other day:
There seem to be a number of procurement decisions that have been made in the past, and some nursing policies and procedures, that may not be based on good scientific evidence. Much of these decisions and policies pertain to infection control issues.
Examples:
1. the wholesale move to single-use disposable gowns and surgical drapes
2. the ubiquity of single-use disposable surgical plastic equipment
3. the policy about the need to use a separate bottle of surgical antiseptic prep solution for each patientAs we now have an obligation to progress NSW public hospital healthcare to net carbon zero by 2040, it is time to analyse these and other practices in and around operating theatres to identify those that are not based on evidence and carry adverse environmental impact (high carbon footprint of supply chain, non-biodegradable waste, etc.) and high cost to the health system.
To this end, I am seeking your support and that of your colleagues, in sifting through the evidence base and in promoting environmentally sustainable practices and procurement.
Josh and Sarah have already leant their support to our campaign to address the inappropriate use of non-sterile gloves in the hospital, particularly starting with operating theatres.
Many thanks, and I look forward to discussing this further with you.
Regards
Stan C

Hi Cate,
Whilst not drive through specific, reference to vehicle air conditioning being on fresh air in a ‘Social contact environment’
Page 3:
One of our drive throughs in WA has a well-coordinated process but with low throughput. Attendance is usually by appointment and the occupants are advised to wind the window down whilst waiting at the final stop sign. This is the last stop prior or to reaching the test location, to avoid a sudden “air exchange” next to the testing clinician.
Kind regards,
Charmaine Dalton

HI everyone
Could you let me know what advice you give to members of the public waiting in their car for a COVID-19 test? Do you advise them to have windows up with A/C on fresh air or recycled air? The temp has been in the 40’s here so A/C is essential.
There seems to be 2 differing opinions. Our policy when transporting patients with active TB apart from PPE is to drive with windows down if possible and A/C on fresh air. I support windows up with COVID-19 but am confused about the A/C on recycled.
Any thoughts on his big pressing issue- ha ha
