    Hi Susan

Thanks for your email. There is many different types on the market and different sizes and it can be confusing for consumers to get the correct system.

There is some good research on the benefit of such Portable Air Cleaners (PAC) but it must be performed in conjunction with an overall risk assessment and control strategy. They certainly have their place but no a magic bullet.

We have assessed many of these and most are pretty good however making sure you get the right size for your areas is critical otherwise you can be just wasting money.

Happy to discuss further if you like.

    Hi Allison/ Suzi,

What are your thoughts about air purifiers?
I heard that government bought some for public schools.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.techguide.com.au/amp/samsung/samsung-deploys-51000-air-purifiers-for-the-safe-return-of-students-to-the-classroom/

Are there any specific evidence that you know of?

I was thinking whether it will be beneficial for Stephenson House Outpatient, esp there’s no proper central ventilation system like at Kangan Drive.

    Keen to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks.

    Hi All

These are generally fit tested by Occupational hygienists and there is many qualified to perform these services. I agree a National Approach is required.

There are three filter media test companies in Australia. Two Government and Oner private. TGA cannot test these themselves at this stage.

These would be fit tested to Australian Standards.

Apart from the issues with lack of supply, there is limited expertise in fit testing / fit checking in this sector healthcare and I am concerned about the risks to the personnel working in these operating rooms.

In my humble opinion, there needs to be a nationally endorsed response to your questions.

    Hi all

We are interested in other states/jurisdictions/facilities approaches to fit-testing, either qualitative or quantitative.

We had a qualitative fit-testing program within our hospital previously and we made the decision to disband this earlier in the year for a number of reasons.

We are now getting significant pressure from a particular clinical group to re-establish fit-testing again.

We had a number of issues with the fit-testing program previously and our rationale for not re-establishing fit-testing currently include the following:

    * Fit-testing has not been proven to provide safer P2 (N95) mask use compared with fit-checking alone
    * Despite the presence of the Australian Standard, fit-testing is not mandatory and fit-checking is accepted to be the minimum standard
    * There are a number of practical difficulties to be considered with the re-introduction of a fit-testing program;

    * If fit-testing is offered to one craft group, all healthcare workers that require a P2 (N95) mask within their clinical role will expect a similar approach. Equitable approach would need to be considered for all.
    * Some individuals will not have a successful fit-test e.g. do not taste the fit-testing solution, do not have a successful fit-test with any of the available masks. Does this equate to that healthcare worker being unsafe with an appropriately fit-checked P2 (N95) mask?
    * Resources required for fit-testing program is not insignificant i.e. human resources and PPE required, with consideration for annual testing thereafter
    * What to do for individuals that have not been fit-tested as yet but they are required to work with the requirement of a P2 (N95) mask?
    * What to do if individuals fit-tested mask is not available at the point of care, particularly in the setting of the current PPE stock issues?

We would be really keen to understand others thoughts and experiences and approaches.

Your urgent advice would be much appreciated. Please feel free to email me off-line or even call me if you can

    Hi Kristin

Humid air will condense very quickly if the temperature drops. Humidity in air is not linear and warm air has a much higher ability to retain moisture. If say at 26oC, the humidity was 80-90%RH, then if the temperature dropped to 22 or less then you would see an increase of humidity to saturation/dew point and rapid condensation on colder surfaces as the air is no longer able to maintain the moisture. This is similar to dew on your windscreen on cold mornings.

The other issue is that at greater than 60%RH, sporulation can occur from environmental mould and bacteria. This can occur quite rapidly also and may compromise the RMD and stored products. Your HVAC should be able to control RH at the range explained by Sean below.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Kristin,

I cannot give you a timeframe, but in relation to any RMDs you may have in the sterile storage area as per AS4187 it is stated that environmental controls be maintained as follows:

    * Temperature to be maintained within the range of 18C – 25C
    * Relative humidity to be maintained within the range of 35% – 70%
Any deviation from these parameters will result in the integrity and sterility of the products being compromised. It may be fair to apply this to other stored products and not just RMDs – just in case. I wish I could be of more help. Cheers.

    Kind regards,
    Sean.

    Dear colleagues,
At what level of humidity and over what time frame would it take for condensation to form in a sterile storeroom where temperatures have fluctuated between 19 and 26 degrees over a 24 hour period and humidity has peaked at 90%?
Reason being, we have been advised that sterile stock is uncompromised at 26 degrees unless condensation has formed causing the trays to become damp.
    Thanks for your assistance.
    Kind regards
