It’s very sad news. Beth taught me so much about redevelopment and she was always willing to provide advice and support. I will forever be grateful to her. She was an inspiration to many of us
Condolences to Beth’s family and colleagues xx

I’m so sorry to Hear of Beth’s passing. I remember her good work & she definitely had impact on our service as we changed our approach with Caesars & subsequently decreased infections. My sympathy to her family & friends,

    Dear valued colleagues and friends,
It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that Beth Bint, who many of you will remember with fondness as she never failed to make an impression, has passed away this morning. Beth was diagnosed with leukaemia last July, and sadly her condition did not respond to treatment.
Beth passed away peacefully at home, with her family and her closest friend at her side.
Beth had worked in the field of infection prevention and control for many years, starting her journey in the field when she nursed HIV patients in the 1980s. Originally from the Newcastle area, this is where she began work as an infection prevention and control nurse. After a short time working with the Department of Health in South Australia, she returned to NSW to take up the position of Clinical Nurse Consultant with the Infection Management and Control Service (IMACS) in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, based at Wollongong Hospital.
Starting with us in June 2009, she had a baptism of fire as the H1N1 influenza arrived at the same time. Beth took this in her stride, and over the ensuing years her influence on the work of IMACS can be easily identified. She had a very strong belief in the importance of putting the patient at the centre of our work, rather than the pathogen. Beth also used her extensive knowledge and skills in contributing to statewide policies and guidelines including the NSW Health Infection Prevention and Control policy and the Australasian Health Service Facility Guidelines.
One of the highlights of Beth’s recent career was winning the scientific panels’ award for best poster at the ACIPC conference in 2016.

We wish Beth’s family and the many friends and colleagues that she touched on a personal and a professional level, our very best thoughts at this sad time.

With my very best wishes to you all

    Hi Lincoln
We developed a template to review our machines (pan and utensil washers) which helped us
Feel free to use if you would like and add elements you find important.

We looked at everything from ANZ4187 compliance with Validation testing / use of detergents/ how many items could be washed / consideration of cycle time and water usage (impact on environment)
Our SSD Manager helped with the review which helped us understand what was needed from a Standards point of view
Our Microbiologist reviewed the testing reports for the machines before final approval given

When designing our dirty utility rooms we looked at

    1. Dirty and clean flows

    2. Position of extraction fans in pan room to be above flush sink and near pan sanitiser to remove steam created by cycle

    3. Ensuring no cupboards or racks above flush sink

    4. Ensuring that there were no gaps under shelving (coved flooring)

Our sanitisers are within the dirty utility room
From my experience the flush sink would be more of a risk of aerosols. Happy to be corrected. Staff should be careful when loading bottles to protect from splash etc.

It is only Within our new SSD we have complete physical separation of areas but this principle did not apply in pan rooms. However we made sure we had Dirty and clean flows

    Good luck
You can contact us at SGH if you would like some additional guidance
    Thanks

    Hi Everyone
In developing an HDU the staff would like to have a pan sanitiser installed. Has anyone else had experience with this?
Are there any development guidelines that refer to the requirements around pan sanitisers?
Are they supposed to be located in a separate room, for example? Do they produce aerosols so require a separate room?
The AusHFG do not seem to provide that kind of detail so your assistance would be welcome.
    Cheers

    Hi Lindy
We haven’t got any further in place than you but I have been suggesting that we run all these things on a dedicated TV channel through all the TV’s in patient areas.
    Both wards and waiting areas.
No luck getting it to happen as yet but working on it.
The other one for staff that I have considered is changing the screen savers to different standards info on a monthly basis.
Not sure if any help but just some thoughts I have had.

    Hello

We are traveling though our accreditation journey again and I was just wondering what other sites were doing in relation to providing consumer information about your services (not just infection control but all other areas such as and their rights etc etc ) as we are supposed to be ensuring we are providing engagement & information to our consumers…& even more that they understand what we are providing them with !!

So I was wondering if anyone’s facility or service were already doing anything perhaps a little more novel rather than be reliant on paper based booklets or pamphlets…that either are not disposable but have a laminate cover (and are required to be wiped down each time a pt is discharged – very onerous and not always possible)…… or are required us to chop down half the world’s trees to ensure all consumers got information to get adequate information to our consumers

Happy to be contacted off line…just hoping for some inspiration of what I think may be possible…. is already be in place by other services.

    Thanks in advance for sharing

    Best regards

    Lindy
