Hi Teresa, if they come into contact with body fluids (blood and faeces) they should be reprocessed as semi-critical. I know in some birthing suites they ask the mother to stand up to avoid this issue. You cant guarantee that the next woman who the probe comes into contact with will have entirely intact skin.
Happy to hear others thought!
Regards, Vanessa.

Dear brains trust
A question has arisen today which I thought I would ask in this forum. Our team would appreciate your feedback.
Ultrasound probes are often used on intact skin in our delivery suite while the labouring mother is in the bathtub to monitor the foetal heart rate.
These probes obviously become contaminated with blood and body fluids during this process.
They are used on multiple patients but not ever used on broken skin, nor are they used internally.
Q: Do these ultrasound probes need to cleaned and reprocessed as per semi-critical RMDs?
Thanking you in advance.
Warm regards
Teresa Lewis
