Media Matters: How reporting shapes a modern pandemic

Australia’s media has played an indispensable role in helping the public navigate the unprecedented upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This role has been complicated by fast-evolving, uncertain, and often contradictory information about the pandemic. The media has had to balance supporting and promoting the official public health messaging, whilst also facilitating legitimate questioning of drastic measures such as compulsory mask wearing, strict lockdowns, border closures and compulsory vaccinations.

Our panel of leading journalists, producers and media commentators will discuss the challenges faced, lessons learnt, and the role the media played in shaping the narrative and response to an unparalleled public health emergency.
