Good morning,
I’ve been asked to review guidelines for a wax bath to be utilised in the hand clinic by our OT’s.
They tell me, we did have a wax bath years ago, but no one can say why they stopped using this aid.
Can anyone share any IP&C implications associated with wax baths?
I have no experience with this product and would appreciate any assistance.

Dear Kristin,
I know in the past wax baths have been used in beauty therapy as part of manicures. The wax was heated to melting point and the hands dipped in a couple of times to coat them. The remaining wax was then re-heated for the next client. So you can imagine the potential for contamination. Not sure if this is still done though as I know there was also the potential for wax getting too hot.
The OT’s would likely use one lot of wax per patient and clean between. From memory, the ‘melting pots’ were fairly basic, so I imagine easy to clean. However, they would need to check with manufacturers recommendations regarding cleaning products.

Possibly is may be related to the information around waxing and cross infection risks that was put out by NSW health some time ago (in conjunction with Skin Penetrating guidelines etc ) ?

Hello All
I can remember our burns unit at Burwood Hospital in the 1970es and maybe
80es used warm wax for exercising damaged hands. Of course, the wounds on
the hands were healed before it was used. However, the wax was used on
several patients. It was in my early days of Infection control, and I
addressed the need to decontaminate the wax, between patients, by heating
it to a temperature which the wax could tolerate and high enough to kill
bacteria.

Hello Kristin
Paraffin wax baths (thermotherapy) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis affecting the hands are used in aged care homes. The modern version of the equipment (equipped with thermostat) has manufacturer’s instructions for use on the cleaning/maintenance of the containers and the wax. This form of heat treatment requires a system for documenting and monitoring/auditing the process for compliance. The treatment is often performed by therapy assistants under the direction and supervision of a physiotherapist or occupational therapist in this setting.
