    Hi everyone,

What is your practices regarding heating of heatpacks in microwaves. Do you use dedicated microwaves for this purpose? If it is being shared with patients to warm up their home meals any practices you encourage?

    Thanks,
    Carien

    Hi Carien,
We have moved from dedicated microwaves for heat packs to only using the
gel packs which are crushed and heat up. Heatpacks became a safety issue
with burns and the gel packs only heat to a certain temperature.

I think you’ll find this is covered by WH&S issues (scalding, bursting of contents etc.) and the obvious infection transmission issues (gastro!!!), especially putting in same place as food. Plus, a lot of places say they can’t warm up their own food because of the risk of food poisoning.
Most of us are going to respond in this way I think!!
    Cheers,
    Helen.

Where do you source the heat packs that crush and heat up? We are looking at removing the gel heat packs.

I work in an aged care facility and homes are required to have separate microwaves for heating heat packs as opposed to those in which meals etc can be heated. They are all marked as such, according to their use.
Heatpacks are still heated in microwaves, although many homes have changed from wheat based packs to others less likely to burn, even when heated with a glass of water in the microwave.
