    Dear Colleagues,

Can anyone share with me their experience and/or procedures for cleaning specialised equipment with steam, we are currently looking at steam to assist with cleaning of wheelchairs used in our spinal unit.

The wheelchairs belong to the hospital and are trialled by patients during their hospitalisation to determine the chair best suited to their needs, prior to purchase.

The trial chair is returned to the spinal unit for cleaning and reuse.

The problem is that the seat cushion and arm rest covers are fabric, we have investigated many options for cleaning. The fabric covers cannot be changed for an impervious covering as the fabric this allows the patient to become adept at transferring on the same type of chair/cover they will use at home (vinyl/impervious covers have been ruled out due to risk of slip/fall and patient unable to develop skill of transferring on the cover they will use at home).

We can remove seat and armrests from the metal frame (and electrics) and clean the frame separately.

We are in contact with another spinal unit in Sydney as a well as a rehab unit regarding their procedures (both use steam) but also would like to know other HCFs experience with steam for this type of cleaning.

    Regards

    Julie Hunt
