    Good morning

If any hospitals are currently performing cataract, glaucoma or corneal surgery – have you had any cases of TASS? Sometimes is mistaken for early sterile endophthalmitis.

If yes, can you please contact me.

Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) is an acute, sterile postoperative anterior segment inflammation that develops following anterior segment surgery (12-48hrs). While TASS occurs most commonly after cataract surgery, it has been noted to occur after any anterior segment surgery, including cornea transplant or glaucoma surgery. By definition, postoperative inflammation TASS is noninfectious and is caused by any substance that enters the anterior segment of the eye either during or immediately after surgery, causing toxic damage of the intraocular tissues. TASS may result in significant anterior segment sequelae and ocular morbidity. Major efforts should be focused on the prevention of TASS.

    Common reasons to cause TASS

    1. Cleaning and sterilization of instruments – residual chemicals

    2. Intraocular solutions such as BSS

    3. Intracamel antibiotics

    4. Eye drops – contaminated

    5. Local anesthetics
