Hi All. I am currently reviewing our tourniquet usage, and found that we use reusable tourniquets that are cleaned in various ways. I would like to know who are using single patient use tourniquets vs multiple patient use, and how you clean/reprocess the reusable ones. Specifically any comparisons that may have been undertaken between the 2 and costings.

    Thank you in advance

    Michelle Kennedy

    Hi Lori
We moved to single patient use disposable tourniquets with quick release clip several years ago. A new disposable tourniquet is used upon admission, or soon after, and then is reused on the same patient throughout their hospitalisation.

    Kind regards
    Heather

    Subject: [ACIPC_Infexion_Connexion] Tourniquets

    Dear ACIPC Colleagues,

I am doing some work on tourniquets used in our business and I would like to understand more about the types of tourniquets currently being used in various settings for IV cannulation.
    What are people using:
    – Multiuse elastic tourniquets with a standard operating procedure for cleaning
    – Single use, clip
    – Single use, tie-up

What is the most appropriate style of tourniquet to use from an IPC perspective.

Thank you in advance for your feedback and guidance on this topic.

    Kind regards

    Good morning Lori

There have been a number of studies that show tourniquets to be a potential source of infection in the healthcare setting. I have attached two of these for you, the Golder paper may be of particular interest.

ITL BioMedical have a number of single use options available and I would be happy to send through further information should it be required.

    Warm Regards
    Fiona
