Good afternoon, here at the Canberra hospital we have a 2 step process for
terminal cleaning. Rooms are initially cleaned with detergent & water then
diluted bleach and left to dry- however our cleaners are wanting to to wash
off the diluted bleach. I am wondering what happens in other hospitals? ThanksMessages posted to this list are solely the opinion of the authors, and do not represent the opinion of AICA.

We use the Patient-centred risk management strategy for multi-resistant
organisms Published by the Quality, Safety and Patient Experience Branch,
Victorian Government, Department of Health 2011. In response to the fact
that “The ACSQHC guidelines recommend that each healthcare facility is to
conduct its own risk assessment and manage patients colonised or infected
with multi-resistant organisms (MROs) in the local context.”So the answer to your question really depends not on time but on risk.
So my recommendation is that your answer depends on whether he had any
clinical risk factors such as but not limited to wounds and if they were
exposed during that time, also importantly on who else uses that space when
he leaves such as immunocompromised peoples. The risk assessment does negate a blanket approach to treating all MRO
patients the same, so in theory 2 different patients with MRSA could be
managed differently from an infection control point of view. It takes time
to risk assess each case but the benefits are that it is patient centred,
uses a risk management approach and may actually reduce the need for
transmission based precautions and terminal cleaning.I hope this helps

Dear All,
Just a very simple basic Infection Control question:
What is the minimum time required for an MRO patient to occupy a room for
necessitating a terminal clean upon discharge? For example, if a patient is
in a room/space for an hour only, does that room/space then need a terminal
clean?Many thanks for your reply,
Rita
