    Dear All,

NSW Private Hospitals have been informed that the government stockpile of masks will not be available for private hospitals, also that unless a patient is medically unable to be cared for at the private hospital facility, they are not to transferred to a public hospital.

Whilst we are not out of supplies of masks, if we were to have many patients diagnosed with COVID-19, we would struggle with supply, particularly with surgical masks. We are not a surgical hospital, rather, medical, post surgical, rehab & palliative care.

During the SARS outbreak, masks were reportedly re-used, after spraying with a disinfectant and bagging for a nominated period of time. There has also been talk of hand made masks for low risk situations.

Im wondering what other facilities are experiencing?

    Regards,

    Susan

    Dear All

I heard on the news yesterday that the army has been called in to support a
manufacturing firm in Shepparton, Victoria to assist with the packing PPE.
The report indicated that Australia would be self-sufficient.

A dozen Australian Defence Force engineers are assisting manufacturer
Med-Con keep up with increased demand due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Med-Con was established in 1989 and is based in Shepparton, in regional
Victoria. It makes products including face masks, disinfectants and hospital
linen. The ADF personnel are helping in production, maintenance and
warehousing roles, under the Defence Assistance to the Civil Community
    (DACC) arrangements.

“The Defence support will fill a short-term gap while Med-Con Pty Ltd
recruits and trains supplementary staff. This is an example of the kind of
exceptional circumstances which the DACC rules are designed to cover,” said
    defence minister Linda
    Reynolds in a statement.

The ADF staff are engineering maintenance specialists from the Army Logistic
Training Centre and the Joint Logistics Unit in Victoria, said Reynolds.

Industry minister Karen Andrews said the federal government was doing what
it could to enable companies to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that
at 2 pm on Tuesday there were over 400 cases of COVID-19
nationally, with 210 in NSW, 94 in Victoria, and 78 are in Queensland

As reported by @AuManufacturing, the federal government has issued a
request for information from companies capable of supplying medical personal
protective equipment (PPE), such as surgical gowns, gloves, goggles, hand
    sanitisers and clinical waste bags

This RFI can be seen on the government tenders site

    here.

Andrews’s department is mapping national capability for medical PPE
production to respond to demands for increased output.

“We are casting the net as widely as we can, asking manufacturers if they
have the ability to diversify the work they do,” she said.

“Australian manufacturers have already been reaching out with offers to
help. I’m confident our Aussie ingenuity will guide us through this
    difficult time.”

Maybe the Private Hospitals Association may be able to help with
    communication/ supply for smaller organisations?.

The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services has also put out guidance regarding rational use of PPE, based on a WHO document. Both of these documents can be downloaded from the Vic DHHS website (link below). Look under the ‘Resources for health professionals’ tab.

I would not recommend spraying masks and reusing them. They are made out of paper and I cannot imagine that their integrity could or would be guaranteed after doing so.

    Hi Keven,

The information was given in a Private Hospitals teleconference, not formally documented, however it is difficult to find an avenue to gain information on options. I was not involved in the teleconference, rather had feedback from it.
Local distribution via public health units is being investigated, although their online requests are for GPs & Dentists.
    We are continuing to investigate.
