    Hi All,

We are currently reviewing the rooms that contain sterile and non sterile consumables within all of our wards and departments. Only one ward has reprocessed medical devices stored in their storage room.
Do the standards that apply to storage of reprocessed medical devices in sterile store rooms of operating suites, in relation to ventilation, humidity and air exchanges, apply to rooms in wards and departments that contain single use sterile consumables.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Sue,

This query requires a multi-faceted reply, so bear with me.

In the new edition of AS/NZS4187:2014 Clause 9.5 [page 72] states that maintaining the sterility of both reusable medical devices and items purchased sterile is dependent upon maintaining a suitable storage environment, staff education and methods of transport within the facility. Guidance as to what suitable storage conditions may be is included in Appendix A – Guidance to Clause 9.5.

In addition there are specified requirements for sterile storage environments in terms of ventilation requirements contained within a ventilation standard AS1668.2 and there are also other requirements contained within the Australasian Health Facility Design Guidelines. Building on this – there are also storage requirements that may be specified by the single use device manufacturer.

Bottom line is you need to look at all of these factors and if your storage environments in the wards dont meet the specified requirements then you conduct a risk assessment based on those conditions and the length of time the devices may be exposed to them. You will often find that commercially produced items have more robust packaging than items processed in your CSSD – and as such the manufacturer’s requirements for storage to maintain sterility may be less stringent than requirements specified in the above standards, as the packaging is impermeable, unlike sterilisation wraps and paper/laminate pouches.

I am not sure if that really helps – but if you want to look further, QLD Health has a great resource on this topic which I have attached to this email.
