Hi all
We are currently looking into replacing reusable tourniquets with
single-use disposable tourniquets throughout the hospital.Just wondering if anyone has implemented a similar strategy in their
facility and what were the pro’s and con’s you encountered?Regards

Hello Everyone,
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been using the single patient use, blue, latex free Multigate tourniquets for general ward use for some time now. These do not have a clip, but are pulled and looped under itself. (there is a Youtube video of how this is done) These have been cost effective and proven to be satisfactory. The emergency trollies have the traditional style of tourniquet with a clip, as it was found that the Multigate would sometimes snap in the urgency of an emergency situation use.Kind regards
Gwen Paull

28/06/2012 at 11:39 am #69144Hi Maureen,
We tried some last year from one company and they were dreadful; they
snapped easily and the anaesthetists didn’t like them. I don’t know
about any other brands.
However, what we do actually do now is send all of our usual
tourniquets to CSSD at the end of each day to be cleaned, which is
working out well.
Cheers,
Helen.

Hello Collette
We introduced single use tourniquets to our facility early this year
after an audit revealed ad hoc
cleaning of re-usable tourniquets. You do have to source a reliable
product. Some of the products available were not sturdy enough and
unwound at the most inopportune moment. The product we use now is sturdy
single use and we have had no reported problems with the product now in
use.Liz Vanderlinde

Has anyone started to use the Terumo disposable tourniquet?
It looks the same as the re-usable one but does not have a release
button. The elastic band is glued with a simple glue, so when you have finished,
you release the tourniquet by pulling the band.It is another option that does not have a significant change of
technique.Maree Sommerville
