    Hello everyone
I’m wanting your thoughts on silicone wrist braces and being able to maintain correct hand hygiene. I have been reinforcing to staff that they need to be “bare below the elbow” and I have had some push back with someone personal care worker wanting to wear a silicone wrist brace. I would really appreciate any information and to hear what others are doing .

    Warm Regards

Hi Amanda, I would definitely insist they be removed. I have a medic alert bracelet that I cannot wear at work as per guidelines, and I feel the silicone bands are far less important than that.
Theres always push-backs, but the guidelines are there for a reason.
    Good luck

    HI Amanda

I would suggest to check with your HR team regarding the contract of employment under the Heading of Uniform.
Their maybe a statement included regarding not wearing jewellery , bracelets etc .
If not included there then I would refer to Infection Control Policy of your organisation regarding hand hygiene
Evidence based best practice as per the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare (2019) state in relation to hand hygiene

    P38 Technique
Key factors in effective hand hygiene and maintaining skin integrity include [19]:
the exposure of all surfaces of hands and wrists to the preparation used

Perhaps toolbox sessions to support improving staff understanding of why the silicone bands pose a risk to ineffective hand hygiene would help along with other strategies suggested in a Bare Below the Elbows Project Presentation at the ACIPC Conference in 2021

    https://acipcconference.com.au/events/bare-below-the-elbow-project

    Good Luck
    Kind regards
    Catherine
