We are currently reviewing our policy/protocols for infant feeding
equipment and there appears to be a difference of opinion when it comes
to the cleaning/sterilisation process, especially with formula feeding
    equipment. My question is do you advise mothers to;

    1. wash equipment in warm soapy water, rinse in hot water, and air dry
and store in a clean container, or

    2. wash equipment in warm soapy water, rinse in hot water, air dry and
store in a clean container, and sterilise once every 24 hours, or

    3. wash equipment as above and sterilise after each use.

    Hi Cathy
In NSW it depends, if the equipment is to be use by different patients then it must be thermally disinfected before reuse by another baby. It is the same requirement for all feeding equipment.
If it is to be used for the same patient this is not a requirement.

    Hi Catherine,
In our maternity unit, we do the following:
Rinse with cold water after use
Wash thoroughly (using bottle brush for bottles), in hot water and detergent
    Rinse in hot water
    Thermally disinfect
Place in fridge and change after 24 hrs (labelled).
We are lucky though that we have a bottle washing machine.
    Regards,
    Helen.
