NSWHi Jenny
We include our volunteers (and we have a lot of them!) in our staff health program, providing access to free vaccines as required. We mainly ensure they have immunity to Hepatitis B and give annual flu vaccines to those under 65 (we encourage those over 65 to go to their GP for the free flu vaccine for that age group).
Volunteers are an integral part of our patient-centred care, and as such we believe are at as much occupational risk as other non-clinical staff having patient contact. So it makes sense to us, and adds value to their volunteering, to include them in our staff health program.
Cheers

At our facility which is government funded, we provide the volunteers with access to free supplied influenza vaccination.
In your situation you could also direct your volunteers to Pharmacies as they can administer influenza vaccination (Quadrivalent) to those under 65 years of age and greater than 16 years of age, at a reduction of the cost involved in seeing their GP and paying for a consult etc. They are meant to enter the details in the Australian Immunisation register (AIR) and do provide a record to the consumer.Kind regards

25/06/2019 at 12:56 pm #75523Hello Jenny
As a NSW Health Service we are required to comply with our state policy (as attached)
They are afforded the same services and rights as employees as they are considered in
Key definitions :
Volunteer – a person who works for a NSW health Agency without being paid2.1 Each NSW Health agency must ensure that appropriately trained assessors are identified and their details made available to the relevant personnel so that all workers, other clinical personnel, volunteers and students are assessed, screened and vaccinated as required before they attend a NSW Health agency.
Flu vaccine is provided to them for free by the health service (or they can see their GP if they prefer )
An annual influenza vaccination program must be implemented and made available for all workers and all Category A High Risk workers must receive the annual influenza vaccine as specified in Section 4 Annual Influenza Vaccination Program
Hope this information useful for your benchmarking
Kind regards

VICHi Jenny,
We are a publicly funded Specialist cancer hospital and have in excess of 200 volunteers most of whom are in contact with patients. Many are older but we now see a lot more Uni students.
If they can provide serological evidence of immunity we accept but if anything is missing or they do not have evidence we treat them the same as our new employees and they have screening tests done which is paid for by the hospital.
As for Influenza- we vaccinate and if they are >65 years they get that vaccine also. However many will have at their GP if they can as they often have stock before us.
Kind regardsJennifer Breen
