Hello Melinda,
our Theatre Complex underwent a major fire upgrade earlier this year
which interrupted the entire complex including the Sterilising Services
Unit next door. Solid plywood barriers were erected in different
sections of the complex according to where the works were taking place
to ensure a solid barrier between the works and the theatres which were
still in use ie compartmentalising the work area. Two HEPA filtered
Negative pressure extraction units were utilised during the works, they
were placed inside the work area to ensure air was pulled into the work
area and HEPA filter on extraction. Air sampling was conducted prior to
the works commencing, during the works and at completion of sections of
the work after the area was deep cleaned. An Infection Control Nurse
worked very closely with the engineer who coordinated the works and with
Theatre management. Inspections were conducted by the ICP using an
‘Infection Control Daily Compliance survey’ (see tool in manual
mentioned below). Our air sampler is a Merck MAS 100.
We conduct air sampling routinely every quarter to ensure we have a good
baseline for the OR complex.
A helpful resource is a manual we (The Loddon Mallee Region Infection
Control Resource Centre) compiled “Infection Control Principles for the
Management of Construction, Renovation, Repairs and maintenance within
Health Care Facilities”. 2nd ed. It is available to be downloaded from
the Australian Hospital engineers website.
All the best with the building works,
regards,Jane Hellsten

Behalf Of MelindaL GriffithsMy Facility is currently planning to close a part of the Operating
Theatre down to do some renovations. The hospital executive have asked
me to devise an “air quality” program. Can anyone share their experience
or steer me in the right direction.Melinda Griffiths
