    Hi Jenny,
my only experience with these shelf types is in commercial kitchens in my role as an environmental health officer (in a former life). We found that powder coating was a relatively robust material as a surface and was easily cleaned as it was smooth and impervious. The down side is that when it began to deteriorate the coating fell off in largish pieces.
Baskets as storage units (whatever the smooth, easily cleanable finish) were also acceptable, as dust and other environmental contaminants did not accumulate like on a shelf.
Of course this might not be acceptable in a clean room…
    Kind regards,
    Sam
