Hi,
Can I raise this with the infection control group for investigation – some staff have given some information as to possible health risks for patients (cytotoxic risks) from the processing of pre-printed labels which get processed with the reusable instruments.
Has anyone else heard of this? I have found one article in the research which talks about the potential. (See attachment). The easiest solution would be to simply process the labels separately and remove any possible risk to the patients or instrumentation.
Is this something we can or should consider?Regards,
Christine Lawson

Hi Christine,
This issue reared its ugly head about 10 years ago in the sterilising
services sector. Basically there were concerns about latex being in the
printer toner used for printing / photocopying count sheets. There were also
issues with ink transference onto instruments if the printed side came into
contact with an instrument during the sterilisation process. It ended up as a storm in a teacup. As you can see by the conclusion in that
paper, it was demonstrated that the printer ink was not cytotoxic.I’ve quickly scanned the most recently published international standards and
guidance documents and not one of them raises any issues at all or discusses
cytotoxicity risk of inks used for instrument count sheets, pre-printed
labels that are attached to the packs and / or pens used to write on labels.
There is however a reference to ensuring that the inks are non-toxic.You will also likely find that commercially supplied products for labelling
have undergone some form of biocompatibility testing before being released
for use as medical device labelling products.I’d be curious to see the information that the staff have been given, in
particular the source of this information and the claims upon which this
information has been based.Kind Regards
