    Hi Wendy

We changed from a split septum system to a mechanical valve system in
our ICU approx 2yrs ago. The change was kind of forced on us due to a
change in contract. We had some concerns at the time due to some of the
research we had seen regarding possible increased BSI rates associated
    with mechanical valves.
We had been monitoring our BSI rates prior to the introduction of the
new system so we felt confident that if there was an increase in BSIs we
would become aware of it quite quickly and be able to step in if
necessary. We ensured that not only was there a thorough education
program attached to the roll out but also the provision for follow up
education if problems were identified. We have seen no increase in BSI
rates in our ICU since the introduction of the new lines.

NSW Health has a new contract for voulmetric pumps so we are shortly
going to be going hospital-wide with lines that have a mechanical valve.
Again, we plan to ensure we have a good education program prior to and
during the intitial stages of the roll out and we will continue with our
BSI monitoring. If we identify any problems related to this roll out we
will provide targeted education to those areas/staff that may need that
    additional education.

If you are able to monitor your pre-changeover BSI rates and compare
with your post-changeover results, then you will be able to take action
if you do identify any problems and you could also contribute to the
research on these type of devices, which would be really helpful.

Hope this information is of help to you.
    Regards
    Sheila

Has anyone recently changed to needleless IV admin sets? We are
considering some of these safety systems, but have heard anecdotal
evidence of an increase in BSI rates following introduction. Does
anyone have any experience of this change in systems and therefore
    practice??
    regards
    Wendy
