Hi all, I have been following the thread on the immunisation guidelines for work experience students.
So far the discussion has only considered one side of the transmission risk matrix (transmission risk to the student).
This discussion should also consider the risk of transmission of a vaccine preventable disease from the student to high risk or vulnerable patients/ residents.
As already indicated, it would be unwise to rely on the NIP system to be 100% effective. Some of the students coming into the system may only be partially vaccinated (e.g. gaps in immunisation history), or not vaccinated (e.g. migrants, objectors). With community outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases, it is possible a non immune work experience student could become a source of transmission into the health care facility (e.g. nursery/ paediatric units).
As with everything these days – risk assessment and management of all the elements is the key.Lesley Lewis
