Subject: RE: hanging of IV linesHi Wendy,
We consider that once the line has been disconnected, the giving set must be discarded as it is designated a single use item and disconnection designates the end of that episode of use. This is covered in our single use policy but lines and giving sets are not specifically listed in that policy.
All sorts of problems arise when these lines are not discarded as required I have heard of the wrong patients giving set being attached to cannulae/line hubs for example apart from the bacterial/fungal contamination risk of course.Joanna Harris

Subject: hanging of IV linesGood morning
Our question is: does anyone have a policy on when to change IV lines that are used for antibiotics and then left to hang disconnected by the patients bed side?
Would love to hear from you if you do.
