Thank you Sam,
I’ve had some really useful feedback on this one, mostly indicating that as long as cleaning regimes are up to scratch all should be fine. We’ll be keeping an eye on our environmental cleaning audits of course. We now just need to find a chair that both the podiatrists and the dentists are happy with……

Hi Joanne,
We have several facilities in the ACT that are dentists and podiatrists colocated in the same practice, using the same reprocessing and steri facilities. In our experience it is working in a satisfactory manner. I cannot comment about th e use of the dental chairs for the use of podiatrists, however i can make comment about the podiatry drills that are used as most of these are mobile, self contained units and are not connected to the dental water or suction lines. These mobile units are usually self contained as they also have a vacuum/suction capacity with detritus being contained within the machine and then manually discarded and the machine cleaned. If it’s ok with you i can give you a call and discuss this further with you.
Kind regards
Sam Kelly
________________________________Hello everyone,
Please can you tell me whether you have had experience of a podiatry service and a dental service sharing the same room and equipment (including the procedure chair) in a Public health organisation?
If you have, please can you provide some feedback to me regarding the practical aspects of maintaining optimal infection prevention and control, with particular regard to maintaining an appropriate procedure room environment.
I’m also interested to know whether the shared service used a podiatry chair and a portable type of dental water-line and suction machine (and if so was the water-line management satisfactory?), or whether the podiatrists used a dental chair (and how that worked in practice).
We are being asked to advise on the construction of such a facility, and from my previous experience in the implementation of infection prevention and control improvements in the community podiatry field, I have significant concerns about the suggestion that these two services could be co-located. We’ve been advised there is no extra funding to support increased environmental cleaning services above the routine once a day service provided for community clinics.
The dentists want to provide the full range of services including extractions and endodontic work. The podiatrists are saying they don’t need specialist air handling and extraction equipment.
Reprocessing is not a problem as equipment will be taken off site for central reprocessing rather than being done locally.I’d love to know if anyone has experience of working in this type of setting……..
Thanks
Joanna Harris
