thanks Micheal,
i had a chuckle with you response and visualising re trying to get a
mask on whilst trying to assist a pt mid vomit & the runs!! (not
possible!!)I believe they are trying to cover all bases keep it simple as when the
poor pts / residents aren’t spraying and vomiting I suppose the risk is
less however this can be trickky to guage when you are really busy
working ( i suppose it’s seems to some OK if you don’t do much pt care
&/or get involved with their care until they are on the recovery side of
gastro & no longer wildly vomiting and having the runs????)yes like you we do require staff to wear surgical mask and eye
protection for all pts with gastro until we clear them (as well as full
gown and gloves of course) and funnily enough they are always happy to
comply given they don’t want to catch it either!!I realise as the pt/resident is recovering and coming to the end of
their infectivity phase there is less risk of them spraying etc…but
would hate for our guys to be caught out.. as just when you may think
they are getting better……hence the staff’s great compliance level
usually until they are cleared.
(we can ususally pick the staff who aren’t compliant as they call in
sick with gastro shortly after they have been in contact ……a lesson
that doesn’t happen often thank goodness but they ususally only need to
learn once !?)have a good day and thanks for the humour!
cheers
Lindy

GuidelinesCDC have released a draft GUIDELINE FOR THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF
NOROVIRUS GASTROENTERITIS OUTBREAKS IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGSIt is available at:

One of the points I find interesting is that they do not recommend a
surgical mask should be routinely worn by all staff caring for
suspected
viral gastroenteritis in symptomatic patients, to reduce staff
exposure
to potentially infective aerosols. They have the following
recommendation:3.C.2.a Use a surgical or procedure mask, and eye protection if there
is
a risk of splashes to the face during the care of patients,
particularly
among those who are vomiting. (Category IB)In practice, I do not think staff will actually be able to put on a
mask
in a timely manner every time the patient commences vomiting and the
staff are in close vicinity. (“oh, just wait a minute whilst I get my
mask on!”)How many other facilities encourage all staff having direct patient
contact to wear a surgical mask routinely in the care of all
symptomatic
patients in a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak? Thanks
