Hi Cate
The WHO HH Guidelines explain alcohol concentration, composition and type well. I have attached a couple of slides I developed that may help you.
Also note that there are alcohol types that are from petro-chemicals and alcohol that is natural (ie. from sugar cane and corn). Below are some other concepts to think about.
Also in 2016 the USA FDA asked US manufacturers to submit data regarding the long-term and frequent use of hand sanitisers that contained alcohol. Given the widespread use of alcohol-based HH product this will no doubt become an important issue for us to think about in terms of HCW use. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2016/06/30/2016-15410/safety-and-effectiveness-of-consumer-antiseptics-topical-antimicrobial-drug-products-for
Are all hand sanitisers healthy in terms of their ingredients?
* Most hand sanitisers contain alcohol as either ethanol, isopropanol or n-propanol, or combinations of two of those.
* Other preservatives are used to preserve other ingredients and to extend shelf life.
* Isopropyl alcohol is metabolised by to acetone
* Now some questions on how these sanitisers are absorbed and:
* the long-term safety of daily, repeated exposure to these ingredients
* the use of these products by pregnant women and children
* Emerging science suggesting exposure is higher than previously thoughtHope some of this may be useful for you and other ACIPC members.
