I write in regard to the following statement below relating to surface
disinfection as reproduced from the AICA position stated on its website
athttp://aica.org.au/default.asp?PageID11&ReleaseID307&DisplayTrue
3. Cleaning with a neutral detergent and water followed by disinfection
with 1000ppm hypochlorite solution (other disinfectant products are
ineffective against this organism)AICA rightly recommends enhanced cleaning and disinfection for cases of
C difficile. Many recent papers and presentations made at The Decennial
conference in March 2010 highlighted the critical importance of ensuring
that cleaning and disinfection is comprehensive in terms of disinfection
being applied to ALL surfaces rather than in haphazard fashion as may be
common currently.More importantly, I draw the authors’ attention to a possible error in
their statement regarding ineffective disinfectants. My understanding is
that since late 2009, a germicidal wipe formulation,
has been available to Australian infection control professionals for
surface disinfection. The product’s claim, as accepted by the
Therapeutic Goods Administration, include a kill claim against C
difficile. The product’s efficacy against C. Difficile differentiated it
from all other wipe formulations and make it a disinfectant that is
“effective against this organism”. AICA’s
official journal has also included a range of advertisements about the productincluding its claims against C difficile which make
AICA’s current position even more curious.I would urge AICA Position Statement authors’ to more carefully consider
the ramifications (clinical, professional, commercial and ethical) of
their comments which may have the potential to confuse an already over
burdened Australian infection control community. Whilst timely
publication of Position Statements is highly valuable to members, the
value and application of such Papers are undermined by inaccurate or
misleading information. In this case I would welcome clarification and/
or corrections of AICA’s position on surface disinfection options for C
Difficile. Please also note that the comments in this posting are solely those of
Infection Control Plus and its information resources. Infection Control
Plus is a casual consultant to governments, not for profit organizations and medical industry in several countries.Thank you for considering these issues.
