    Good afternoon all,

I am throwing a question out there with regard to plastic bin liners.
I have been asked if other facilities have plastic bin liners in their inpatient rubbish bins where there are Mental Health patients.
Our new Mental Health Medical Unit Head undertook a risk assessment.
He has challenged that these liners pose a risk with regard to ligature and suffocation and has had them removed.
Do you have plastic bin liners in your in-patient bins or what other alternative do you use?
    Looking forward to the responses.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Marija,

Our mental health ward does not use bin liners in the general areas and the cleaners had changed their practice to ensure the bins are cleaned when emptied.

We no longer have plastic bags in our bins in mental health in areas where the clients can access the bin.
In the servery and other key areas where there is more liquid waste, we had a special bin designed that allowed us to keep the plastic bag but the bag could not be accessed by the client (tamper proof). It was a very expensive option.
Plus we also increased the frequency of emptying the bins and cleaning the bins. This created another issue of increased manual handling!.

Although I was not involved, I know a risk assessment was performed by the mental health team, and they looked at bags that were perforated, but as this only negated the suffocation risk and not the ligature risk, they had a special bin designed. As I mentioned it was a very expensive option.

    Thanks
