    Hi all,

I’ve just recently joined the ACIPC community, and would really appreciate some technical advice regarding the GESA Infection Control in Endoscopy (2010) Guidelines.

My query is to do with the requirements for quality testing of water flushed through endoscopes. Would anyone be able to advise whether, in order to comply with the guidelines to perform surveillance cultures on the water flushed through endoscopes, an Aerobic Microbial Count is sufficient, without species identification of all isolates?

    * For example, would it be acceptable to perform an Aerobic Microbial Count, in the instance of growth detected perform a resample, and only then identify isolates if growth were detected in the resample?
    * Is testing for Pseudomonas spp. initially necessary, or would it be compliant to opt for this test only in the case of growth detected in the initial Aerobic Microbial Count? Or to opt for this test only in the instance of growth detected in a resample (as in the case above)?
    * For those endoscopes where testing for Mycobacteria is advised (Bronchoscopes and Cystoscopes), would it be compliant to opt only for this test in the case of growth detected in the initial Aerobic Microbial Count?
    * Obviously there are significant cost implications to testing for Mycobacteria and Pseudomonas for every endoscope, so I would like to determine whether it is possible to only perform this test when microbial growth has been identified in the initial Aerobic Microbial Count.

Thanks very much for your help – it’s greatly appreciated. My contact details can be found below, in my email signature.
