Hi
I would like to ask a question on the ACIPC_Infexion_Connexion please 🙂
My facility where I work is a regional private hospital in Queensland with 150 beds and other allied outpatient health services.
We have discussed the use of QR scanning system for all Hospital Visitors to assist contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Are there any health care facilities that have implemented this system? If so how well does this work?Thank you
Kind Regards,
Emily Stewart – Infection Control Coordinator RN

NSWHi Emily
Yes, we do a QR code for all entering the facilities (except rostered employed staff). It mainly works, but there are issues with people who either do not carry a smart mobile phone or who are ‘technologically challenged’. So we have stations with iPads at each entrance and staff available to assist people complete the questions, as well as the QR codes on banners outside the doors.
We also have the form online for anyone to complete prior to arriving.

Hi Emily,
We have the QR scanning system in our small hospital.
We find that some of our clientele don’t have mobile phone or have data access and unable to use it and would prefer to write their name on paper.
Staff on the door do try and educate them on how to complete the QR scan, some still refuse.I would say only a quarter of the visitors to hospital use it.

Hi Emily,
DDHHS have implemented this system, predominately in our rural and aged care facilities.
I think it works quite well – of course you will always have people who struggle with technology but the reports that we get are quite interesting.

Hi Emily,
It is probably stating the obvious but in my other life I do web development and have set this up for our own healthcare and others.A QR scan is just a means of directing people to a specific website address.
The QR scan is freely available and you can go to one of the websites that will generate a Image code for you for no cost. You just need to set up a web site that has a form setup to retrieve the information.
You can easily set up a QR code yourself linking it to a free monkey survey page to try it out.The benefits:
People can do it themselves. Their own iPhone will help autofill the information if they want which makes it easier than having to type/write everything into a form.
For people who don’t have a smart phone you can have a staff member fill out the information for them on any internet connected device.e.g. iPad; iPhone or computer
Privacy issues are removed as you dont need to be concerned as to whether staff are showing people everyone else’s details via a paper based system. You do need to be aware of how your web developer is storing the information
No need to worry about infection control of a pen and paper system.
Much easier to do something with the data as it will already be stored in a system like an excel spread sheet, if you ever needed it.Problems
1. You need people to be able to get onto the internet in your location .e.g. if you are in a poor internet location then you will just irritate people.
2. You need staff to have a ready way to retrieve the information and to check and make sure it is actually going into the system
3. You need to know where your developer is storing it.
4. You need to be able to remove the data when it is past its “used by date”.I know that cost maybe an issue but in general if you have an online feedback form then the developer may be easily able to add another table to that database and if not you can use the web work to have a feedback form online at a later date.
Our staff love that they have less work to handle from having a QR code.
Happy to answer questions if this doesn’t make sense.kind regards
