Hi Fiona
Across Peninsula Health we have hand rubs in brackets at all front foyer
reception areas with specific PR developed public signage. In our sub
acute, residential and community health campuses sites for hand rub were
chosen in consultation with Infection Control and the staff on site. At
the 2 hospitals there are specific public signs on the front entrances
including ED, with hand rubs in brackets at reception and along the
foyer. At each lift/stair well we have signs and 2 bottles of hand rub
either side reminding all visitors and staff to do their hands. It is
pleasing to see so many people use them and see them run down. Our
Environmental Services staff are responsible for changing them in all
public areas. We only got approval for hand rubs in public areas due to
a large community gastro outbreak and transmission within the hospital 2
years ago. We also have specific PR developed signs in public areas
asking visitors not to visit if sick.At the entrances to all the clinical areas are the clinical HH posters
(5 Moments) with hand rub. We initially went for the elbow dispenser for
non clinical areas and ward entrances to reduce potential for OH&S
issues (slips, spills and eye splashes) but these in themselves caused
soft tissue injuries with people knocking on them so they have been
replaced with metal brackets in most instances. To ensure correct
placement IC went around at all sites and identified areas and marked
them with a red spot with Engineering following along. We have saturated
all clinical areas with hand rub – on the ends of beds plus outside
every bay and single room, treatment rooms etc.Regards Maureen

Hi Barbara. I am a small country ICC in a Multi Purpose Service in Orbost, Victoria.
We have the ABHR at the entrance to each room and in required areas, eg on dressing, IV, ward round trolleys etc, as well at various spots in OPD, Mid, Nursery, Theatre, Nursing home rooms,Lift entrance, kitchen and entrance, Hostel, Community health areas, Reception, Medical clinic etc, District nurses prefer a gel. Ours are mostly in a steele bracket.
We have reviewed placement of ABHR at the entrances and on the end of beds- however we are small and have a very mixed patient population.
I would like to see your poster please- if you could send by return email.
Thank you.

Subject: Re: [AICA_Infexion_Connexion] Public access to alcohol based handrubsSt John of God Hospital Subiaco has placed posters along with hand gel in all public areas – main entrances, outside each ward entrance, day of surgery admission areas & entry to the operating suite. We even have it outside the hospital chapel!
We have brackets next to the posters for the gel and so far no issues other than having to remind staff from time to time to renew the bottles when empty. If anyone would like to see our poster am happy to send.

I would like to know if any members have placed their alcohol based hand rubs in public areas such as near lifts, entrances etc in their hospitals.
If so where have you put it and what form has this taken (bracket on wall, hand hygiene station etc) and have you had any issues with this.Regards
