Hi all
I have a question. I am currently overlooking at a regional campus as a IPCC. Currently, the aged care is in lockdown due to Covid19 outbreak.
I have a question about the PPE gowns that are used. The facility is supplied with surgical gowns as isolation gowns. My question is are the surgical gowns used as isolation gowns if there is no supply?
I have attached the pictures for view.

Hi Geetha,
As the representative in WA for a manufacturer of gowns, I would suggest that there are many parts to your question.
The short answer is probably, however I would encourage you to refer to the AAMI standards, as Isolation & Surgical gown are constructed & tested differently.
Surgical gowns are AAMI level tested in what are known as Critical areas, which in simple terms means the gown may be constructed of different levels of fabric in non-critical areas.
Ultimately I would suggest contacting the manufacturer directly to discuss what you are being offered, & its ability to meet the clinical need.Best regards,
Howard

These gowns are over and above what is considered a long sleeve fluid resistant gown, and they are sterile which is not necessary for use in an outbreak. This would work out to be very expensive too I am sure.

Thank you for your thoughts. It definitely has helped me. I have contacted the manufacturer directly and it seems that they are water repellent and it is used as a replacement in situation where there is a shortage of the isolation gowns.

Hi all, these surgical gowns are what my aged care facility has been sent as well, we have used these in outbreaks at sister sites as well, Im not a fan of how much packaging rubbish there is , and that they tie up at the side , but staff think they are better in terms of not sweating as much like the other gowns , but they are just as protective as isolation gowns.

I believe these are the gowns that have been provided by the Commonwealth to assist aged care homes with adequate PPE supplies. We have seen similar here in WA.

Subject: [ACIPC_Infexion_Connexion] PPE Tier 3Hi all
I have a question.
Regards
