Hi All,
We are currently reviewing our Peripheral Intravenous Therapy management policy.
In relation to intermittent infusions such as antibiotics our current policy states that the line is to remain connected between doses with a continuous fluid order.
A practise that we are increasingly seeing, that is not part of our current policy, is the line being disconnected from the cannula and to remain sterile the end is looped back and screwed into a port on the line. The line is then reconnected to administer each dose.
I am looking for evidence/guidelines to determine best practise in this area. The 2011 CDC Guidelines for the Prevention of Intravascular Catheter-Related Infections do not discuss this matter.
Thank you for your input.
