As per the ANTT UK framework guidelines we have recommended the use of plastic trays, wiped with disinfectant before and after use, for aseptic procedures such as the administration of intravenous medication, peripheral IV cannulation and wound care. For procedures such as peripheral IV cannulation and wound care a sterile dressing pack is also used to promote asepsis of the field.

Several units had been using paper mache trays prior to ANTT implementation. In alignment with ANTT recommendations, and to promote consistency throughout the organisation, the infection control unit made the decision that all units should replace paper mache trays with plastic trays. For the most part this has been complied with.

However our Emergency Department is reluctant to dispense with the paper mache trays, stating that for many logistical reasons, eg time pressures, hundreds of aseptic procedures per day, work flow issues etc the department would not cope with plastic trays and the maintenance involved. The staff use micro aseptic fields at all times and a sterilised pack is used for peripheral IV insertion. They have agreed to optimise practice for the appropriate disposal of the paper mache trays after use (which is always single-use).

I would appreciate your views on the use of paper mache trays, versus plastic trays, especially within the context of clinical areas who state compelling reasons to maintain this practice.
